While it has long been expected that the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will be redesigned for 2014, few details have been leaked out of General Motors’ engineering offices in Michigan. Until now.

According to Automotive News, the next-generation GM full-sizers will go on sale next year as 2014 models, which means they will be unveiled at an auto show later this year. The New York International Auto Show in April has long been a place where trucks are showcased, but we wouldn’t rule out November’s Los Angeles show, either.

The trade journal states that the trucks will feature an eight-speed automatic transmission to save fuel, as well as a new chassis. It’s expected that Silverado and Sierra will retain their solid rear axles and leaf springs, unlike the coil-sprung Ram 1500. Some reports have suggested that weight-savings of up to 500 lbs. are possible due to some changes.

We haven’t heard much else on the powertrain front, but a version of the automaker’s 300-plus horsepower 3.5-liter V6 seems a natural shoe-in to replace the antiquated sub-200 pony 4.3-liter V6.

Outside, they’ll be treated to a new design with enhanced aerodynamics for further fuel savings, while their interiors are likely to feature a totally new design as well.
