2010 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy 2500 Duramax [Spied]

06/30/2008, 2:49 PM

By Drew Johnson

Even with truck sales way down and fuel prices way up, General Motors’ heavy-duty pickups have to keep up with changing federal regulations and competitors. Here are the first pictures of a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Duramax diesel test mule.

The Silverado HD (and its twin, the GMC Sierra HD) first went on sale about 18 months ago, but GM is giving the truck a mild facelift that hints at major revisions happening under the hood.

The grille in these photos is temporary – cribbed from a current light-duty Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but the revised front bumper is production intent. GM has softened the huge metal flares at the corners of the 2009 Silverado HD’s bumper by topping off the uppermost portion with plastic from end-to-end for 2010.

Pay special attention to inlet in the middle of the front bumper, which feeds air to the truck’s transmission oil cooler. It’s about 1/3 larger than the current inlet and it makes us wonder about the changes GM has planned for the Silverado’s Allison transmission.

The Allison gearbox is mated to the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine, which will be overhauled to meet tough new EPA rules for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions that go into effect on January 1, 2010. The bigger inlet could mean the next-gen Duramax will require extra air for a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, which reduces NOx, but GM has officially stated 2010 Duramax NOx emissions will be scrubbed using urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Using urea SCR should require a less complex EGR system.

Maybe it’s the extreme heat, but our summertime speculation makes us wonder if GM and Allison are planning to add extra gears to the current 6-speed Silverado for improved fuel economy and towing efficiency: Could we see the Allison transmission get 8 cogs, like some luxury cars already have? Or could it possibly take the leap to 12, like some big rigs use? (Twelve gears isn’t as hard as some might think: A gear splitter could be added between the back of the transmission and driveshaft or transfer case, depending whether the truck was 2WD or 4WD. The bottom line though, extra gears would likely require improved airflow to the transmission oil cooler, and thus a bigger inlet in the front bumper.) Just speculation, of course…

Extra gears could also allow the Silverado to one-up new heavy-duty pickups from Dodge and Ford, expected to arrive by 2010 and 2011, respectively. The 2011 Ford Super Duty will feature a new 6.7-liter Scorpion V-8 diesel engine and six-speed transmission.

“Too much gas” is a matter of perspective.
As with most heavy-duty diesel trucks, it’ll do about 15mpg around town, 15mpg on the freeway, 15mpg in mixed driving, and probably about the same 15mpg when towing it’s maximum capacity. Those big trucks always get about the same no matter what you’re doing. For a 2500HD that towing capacity is a whopping 15,000lbs.

Try to tow 15,000lbs behind a Prius and see what kind of mileage you get. Hell, try it even with a light-duty F150 or 1500.

Sorry, ihustle. That just means 32 years ago most American truck buyers turned into complete retards and assumed bigger means better. GM trucks have always been far superior both in reliability and design. I’ve never had a truck give me as many headaches as a Ram or F-Series. The lighter and smaller GM trucks have always returned better towing and payload capacity. So many truck buyers have been brain washed by the “big-rig” look that GM was forced to make their trucks bigger. The transmission in my friends Ram 2500 crapped out twice within 10k miles. I always hear about Ford’s shift levers breaking off. WTF?? The only problem I’ve had with my truck was a bad fuel pump but, that was only because I always used to let the tank go nearly empty. I’ve got 150k on the clock and plan to go another 150k AT LEAST.

Ihustle, are you a green pea? You sure write like it. Buddy, GM builds far superior trucks. The frames on the Ford, although functional, are still substandard compared to GM’s. In addition, the Powerstroke is a second-rate engine designed by a company that even Ford doesn’t like. And F-Series trucks utilize way too low of gearing across the board, resulting in lower fuel economy and only slightly higher tow ratings. In fact, because of those low gears, it has the ability to compete with GM trucks. Ultimately, the only thing that you’ve got going for you is confidence. So good luck in sales. Too bad you’re a moron.

By the way, it’s the best-selling truck only because GM has two truck brands.

If Chevy’s are so good, why does everyone buy the Super Duty Ford instead of the “Hey I got a bulging hood so I must be tougher than a normal Silverado!”?

Both are good trucks. But Ford says if you want a real heavy duty pickup, make one on its own platform, and don’t be a wuss and just “strengthen” your light duty ones.

sprokkets, you said EXACTLY what ford buyers say. “It looks huge so it must be the best” Why do you think GM gave the Chevy a huge bulging hood? So they can get the retards to buy them. GM drivers already know how good their trucks are so they just see the huge hood as a plus. I personally hate the huge front end of the Chevy. I would much rather have the GMC version. In fact, my favorite looking GM trucks were those built from 1988-2000, although they weren’t GM’s high point but were still better than anything else.
Plus, the HD frames, although similar in design, are completely different units. Have you even compared the chassis of the HD to the light duty version? The HD frames are about 3 or 4 inches wider and have much higher rigidity.
I’m a die hard GM truck fan so I’m not just talkin out of my you-know-what-I’m-not-supposed-to-say-or-else-LLN-will-erase-my-post… again, unlike others who just say crap to piss people off.

ihustle, I’ve never owned a Ford because I already know plenty of people who do so I let them find out the hard way.

Duramax+Allison 1000= unbeatable combination.

ihustle: Ford has had an advantage over Chevy because we don’t combine GMC and Chevy sales #’s.

Also Ford does have a stronger Fleet sales #’s. They are cheaper trucks and thats what alot of companies want, since they can write off the losses they incur anyway.

and btw, any truck can claim ‘best overall’ payload or towing in some kind of cab/engine combination(Toyotas claim is using their biggest engine with a Regular Cab Truck!). The one that matters most though is in Crew Cab 1500’s and the 2500 and 3500HD class, and thats where Chevy/GMC has them all beat.

I like the combo of duramax and allison too. Much better than Ford’s. Although I like the Cummins engine the best, there is no way I would, even if it looks right, get a Dodge.

Of course, according to sales charts, the GMC truck is not even on the top 20. Ford though combines sales of both the light and super duty.

Currently as of May, Ford is 37k ahead of the S Series.

You are all speaking on mute points. The majority of everything your saying are opinions. I speak on facts. Ford makes the only truck with a “fully” boxed frame. Best in class payload. Best in class towing. BEST IN CLASS SALES!!!!!!! What are you guys defending? Your going to be beat once again, and again next year, and again the following year. It has nothing to do for working for FORD. These are facts. I only speak on facts. Opinions are like assholes, everone has one. Your entidled to them. You never beat us, and you most likely never will. Face it, Ford has the best truck. Do yourself a favor. Go to youtube and search:Truth about trucks. lol, you are funny man ihustle. i appreciate the humor you provide to this forum.

you need to check your manuals kid and relearn the facts. as i mentioned, your ford is ‘best in class’ in ONE body segment, just as Toyota and Dodge can claim. BUT when it comes to the most popular segment in a light duty truck, the crew cab/full four door, Chevrolet has all the competitors beat in payload and towing.

tell you what, go drive your F-150 crew cab and slam on the brakes. after you peal your nose off the steering wheel, go drive a Chevy and see the difference in braking and handling. Maybe then you’ll want to sell a real truck! The only way I loose a sale to a customer comparing between a Chevy and a Ford truck is either because they are blind loyal to Ford OR Ford had/has better incentives to give away their inferior trucks :)

and thats a fact!

07/01, 1:22 PM

Its not a fact. The F-150, superduty are best-in-class in everything. If its so inferior, which you previously stated, why does FORD BEAT THEM IN SALES YEAR AFTER YEAR. 31 years straight is no fluke. Its like saying the New York Yankees isn’t the best baseball franchise of all time. Once you beat us, i will bow. Until then my head is high. Being the best, is definately paying my bills. I sell at least 10 pick up trucks a month. Were beating GMC by 37k sales already this year. You wont, and never will, catch us. Search:”Truth about Trucks” watch it

First off, ihustle, you should probably learn how to SPEEL since you are an “accomplished” car/truck dealer. Second, I’ve been reading you throwing a lot of “best in class” crap around. “Best in class” (yes, in MY opinion) is a term that the auto manufacturers came up with to ADVERTISE their product as better than the other. And also in MY opinion, I don’t care who uses “best in class” lingo, it’s a load of dog ****. It means that one itty, bitty little component of that vehicle is better than the others, where-as everything else is either the same or inferior. I have operated (never owned) Furds in my time, and I can say with a straight face that they are an inferior product pound for pound. Yes, there are certain things that make them kind of cool (factory built-in auxillary switches is one…and only come to think of it), but the reality is that Furd is a joke. Now stop stealing quotes from Mike Rowe on those commercials and go back to watching your Design on a Dime reruns.

GMC never won and never will. Since you know where i work you can come down and ill do a walk around for you and show you what a real truck feels like. There are exceptions when they are truely passionate about their job and cars in general, so no offense to those of you here.
