The Chevrolet Sonic has earned a five-star overall rating from the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bettering the four-star performance of the rival Ford Fiesta.
The Sonic achieved five star outcomes in the front and side crash portions of the NHTSA’s testing scheme, which was revised (and applied starting with 2011 model year cars) for greater accuracy and a more demanding five-star safety rating.
While the bow-tie subcompact managed just four stars in the rollover test, the NHTSA averages the results of the three tests to determine the overall rating and apparently the Sonic’s showing was solid enough to give it the coveted five star score. The Sonic is the 10th vehicle made by General Motors to earn a five-star rating under the NHTSA’s new testing system.
