General Motors has announced that it will recall 4,296 Chevrolet Sonic subcompacts to check for brake pads that could potentially be missing.

Either the inner or outer front brake pad could be missing on a small number of the cars recalled, GM spokesman Alan Adler said. A missing brake pad could result in longer stopping distances and increase the likelihood of a crash.

GM has stated that there are no known crashes or injuries as a result of the brake pad issue, which was discovered during the course of warranty service for a Sonic owned by a rental company.

GM will begin notifying owners of the recall starting on January 14, and dealers will inspect for absent brake pads and install new units if necessary. If any damage has been caused to the brake calipers or rotors, those parts will also be replaced free of charge.

The affected vehicles were built from June 2, 2011 through November 21, 2011.
