Might as well make the entire front end a headlight assembly. It looks like Edgar-Bug from MIB.

GM should leave this car for India and China. If they do sell it in ‘merica, then it should be offered on a limited basis in metropolitan areas, because I don’t see it being very popular.

As for me, I would much rather have a Sonic if I were looking for a small Chevy.

I am just amazed how fast the large touch/display screens have propagated. Standard on this tiny vehicle with My Link. Even the Focus at Ford does not have it standard. Only an option. I believe the same at Honda and Toyota.

Even Nav is offered as a high penetrating option.

As painful as it is to admit, I have to agree with part of what BD has to say: this car and the Sonic will compete against each other – unless there is a large enough price differential.

It will be interesting to see the real MPG numbers on this. With the smaller engine, it should be better than the Sonic, but with that 4 speed auto who knows? Putting that outdated tranny in there is a bonehead move, but maybe it will allow them to have that much lower price.

And GM also said that they won’t release the new Trailblazer here because it would cut into Equinox and Traverse sales but they’ll run the Spark and Sonic at the same time?? Stupid GM! They need to bring the Trailblazer here so that we have a real SUV to choose from that isn’t full size.

Uh yeah. Microcars definitely do have 4-doors Fill. See Spark with 4-doors? Or 5…whatever. And there are many manufactured in Japan called Kei-cars which are pretty much the same kind as the Spark. As a Toyota ass kisser you would also know Daihatsu, a company owned by Toyota, makes several cars this size and smaller with 5-doors. And the TATA Nano? Yeah. A 5-door. Just because Toyota/Scion i-Puke failed to add 2 extra doors doesn’t mean the rest can’t.

According to an old Autoblog article that was written in 2009 about the Spark, it is suppose to achieve 47 mpg here in the U.S. That is pretty good numbers for a cheap vehicle that I would guess people would be using as a daily driver and not something necessarily to haul people or stuff around.

Micro cars don’t have four doors (Smart, Fiat, iQ)
Why would I get this and not a Sonic with much moor power and similar EPA, similar price?

It’s not a smart car to sell as a Chevy, especially now with the Sonic just coming out, and not established. Chevy is competing against itself. People will see two small 4-doors hatchbacks.

And the timing is awful!

You might want to re-read my post. I addressed using another marque to sell the Spark with. Most Toyota dealers have a separate building to sell Scions from, like Chevy has separate for Buick/GMC. Unless you are saying Chevy and Buick are the same…….

The Spark is essentially going after your micro car market which isn’t something that really exists in America outside of your niche vehicles like Smart and maybe the 500. The iQ and Spark are opening up this market to a population of people that want more car and less I’m a tree hugger than the Smart provides and under a brand they are familar with. The car will not compete with the Sonic…anyone who would compare the two is probably someone that would compare a Corolla to a Camry. Those that think the Sparks interior quarters are just a little too small but still don’t want a Cruze will naturally opt for the Sonic.

Not to disagree with BD but if I go to a Toyota dealership I can buy an
iQ , or an xD or an xB or a Yaris all in the same size range as the
Spark/Sonic. And since they are all in the same dealership it seems to
me they would all “undermine” each other. They are not that different
from each other.

This Spark will not sell well in the US. Too
small and right now under $3.30 gas allows buyers to purchase the more
sensible larger vehicles. However if gas gets up to $5 this car will
have more than a niche market as a 4 door.

GM builds this vehicle all over the world in high volumes so offering it here is not that costly.

With this model we can see how much all the safety and uplevel features we demand here in the US effect weight.

Elsewhere under 2000#. Perhaps with no airbags and bare bones equipped.

US with 10 airbags and full tv screen and much more.

This can only undermine the Sonic, especially when released right after the Sonic itself.

This would ONLY make sense from a business standpoint, if it were release from a GM derivitive, like a Saturn or Pontiac.

CAFE regulations, and GM fleet’s generally poor fuel economy force such new additions. But poor product planning and management prevent success, much like the Chevy Volt fiasco.

It’s potential $12-13k price will be cancelled out by it’s 85HP engine, which will turn off buyers, and will offer less than the competition.

If GM put more money into the base engine of the Sonic, and got the EPA numbers up, this car would not be necessary.

Generally poor forethought and market strategy is GM’s weakness. It is the domestic version of Hyundai

There we go. Good. The Spark is still a go. Hopefully it will be a common sight. The 4-doors will definitely play in its favor for those keeping versatility in mind. Now then…I say this because I believe the Spark is the only one of this city micro cars in the states with 4-doors. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
