Chevrolet teases with Camaro race car at SEMA

General Motors showed a race-ready version of the upcoming Camaro muscle car that, according to the automaker, potentially previews a track-only race car. GM was tight-lipped about details, but we think the Camaro GS show car presented at SEMA today provides a good hint to an upcoming race car that could spawn its own series.

Aside from gutting a standard Camaro SS, Chevrolet added a safety cage, carbon fiber front fenders, an upgraded oil pan, a Tremec TR6060 close-ratio gearbox, a 3 inch exhaust with Coast Fabrication Mufflers and solid engine mounts to create a car that looks ready to head out on the track.

The Camaro should stay put on a closed course thanks to Koni adjustable struts and rear shocks, a lowered ride height, 18 inch Hoosier spec tires and Brembo four-piston race brakes up front.

In addition, Chevrolet rearranged the pedals for ideal heel-toe shifting, added a dead pedal and, of course, installed a racing seat, harness and steering wheel.

We would bet money on the Camaro GS winding up on a race track near you quite soon - hopefully coated in a similar vintage-inspired paint scheme.

You mean the pedals on the production car won’t be arranged for heel-toe? I am VERY disappointed!

Oh this is getting to be retarded. This is the kind of sh*t you bring out AFTER the production car is in on dealer lots. I swear to gawd there’s going to be an anniversary edition before the first one rolls off the line.

And yes I know Dodge did the same thing with their NHRA Challengers.

Maybe with this NASCAR could go back to putting “stock” back into racing.

Wow…… we are back in the 1970’s Trans-Am muscle car wars…”YES”!!!!!!
I hope this will soon be a new trend, the cars we drive every day are as close to the cars that race week in and week out. This will open a new door for brand loyalist, a true “My car vrs. Your car” scenario, for long it has been a “drag-race-war” in drag strip across America, but for those of us that love taking a corner at 73mph in turn 5 at Willow Springs can now look forward to new company…
And yes I own a Ford, and a Dodge, and a Chevy…
And I have owned Jap. cars and Euro. cars…
But mostly the performance models…

I would love to see race versions of the Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang competing in some type of trams am or grand am style of racing

They only way that’s going to happen is if NASCAR sanctions it otherwise any attempt will flounder. There was talk of the Nationwide series going in this direction, but then Toyota would have nothing (Solara- that’s a laugh) to offer. If I had my druthers, I’d drop the trucks and run these instead. Then again, maybe we should first see how many manufacturers are left before anything hits the track.

I’m not feeling this one. I like the look of the Black over this. Yeah, it’s a race car, but it just doesn’t look right to me.
