I don't see what the fuss is about the engine. The Mini Cooper makes more power and has great fuel efficiency with 1.6 liters; doing slightly less with 1.4 isn't exactly earth-shattering results. Oh, and the Cobalt is crap on wheels, and needs to be axed long before 2010.

^like two or three years ago GM was actually selling to businesses (construction companies, contracters... etc) a Silverado that ran on natural gas. My father a test driver at GM's Milford Proving Grounds was driving it like 4+ years ago. They ended up selling not to many and I think have stopped selling them, I think they canceled it.

But just like Honda sells the Civic GX, GM and any other company should get in the natural gas market.

yeah it's pretty confusing steve333. The Cobalt is continuing like you said for 2010 and being built on the new Delta platform. I didn't hear anything about the Cobalt production being shifted to Mexico, but it wouldn't surprise me. They'll probably save costs that way, actually alot of the current Cobalt's parts are manufactured in Mexico so that doesn't surprise me.

Obviously with the rise in gas prices GM (and Chevy for that matter) needs more fuel efficient cars in their lineup, Just like Ford announced that they are doing the same. This 1.4 turbo sounds like the answer, but what's it going to be in? Well since the the public voted on the Groove(?) (or was it the Beat?)it would be nice if they offerred that here. The big three need to start offerring more fuel efficient vehicles to compete so here they are.

Also get a Delta based CUV and mini-van, makes it sound like what Ford is doing with the C1 platform.

This sounds wrong. The Cobalt is getting an entire new replacement based on Delta II in 2009 for the 2010 model year. Which means the Cobalt is not being canceled. Why would it be? GM already said the name Cobalt will continue on.
I did here that Cobalt production is moving to Mexico and that the next Aveo is being built in Lordstown, which also doesnt make much sense.
Best to wait for word from GM on all this.

Doesn't the Aveo already slot in below the Cobalt?

Also, what of all the spy photos LLN has shown us of the supposed new Cobalt, which is supposed to share a platform with the next Lacetti/Optra?

And one more thing: The Pontiac Pursuit hasn't been on sale since 2006. It was renamed G5 when the US got the G5.

Check your facts, LLN.

Or.. perhaps the Cobalt/G5 will be kept in coupe form only, since the Optra/Lacetti has traditionally only been offered as a 4-door, 5-door and wagon.

The car they are talking about is the Daewoo Lacetti/Chevy Optra/formerly Suzuki Forenza replacement seen here in spy shots recently. Wonder if they will keep the Optra name for the US as in Canada? My guess is the Cobalt will be kept in production for fleets as they did with the previous "Malibu Classic".

jayjc08, I am not sure that production will overlap. I don't believe in the first place that in October of 2009 (17 months form today) GM will start rolling out 2010 mini-car or sub-compact with 1.4L turbo engine that id not certified today in US. Neither GM or NHTSA that agile in their execution to produce and certify engine in 17 months, build a car and tooling for production of a brand new car. My doubts are fueled by latest Volt announcements and that is the most important target and goal for GM (according to Lutz, what I would know about GM goals?). Therefore if Volt is slipping and maybe join 2010 lineup in 2010, the nameless car that is just announced probably will not make 17 months for intro 2010 either. Having said that, no matter when "nameless" small car comes out, Cobalt has life expectancy until June of 2010. So, what overlapping? Lets call spade a spade: Cobalt is so successful that in 2010 it will seize to exists being replaced by a better product.

xyunya- Meaning production will overlap. Yes, it is a replacement, but they will definetely still be selling the Cobalt until late 2010, unless waiting lists go down.

I bet they can't ramp up production of the engine to completely replace the Cobalt out of the gate so they will roll both off the line until they get engine capacity up.

The car will come out in 2009, which mean 2010 model year and "Cobalt will be made at least until June 2010" so how it is not a replacement for it?
