Much like Ford and its extensive list of available accessories and graphics packages for its youth-oriented Fiesta subcompact, General Motors is taking a similar route by offering what it is calling Z-Spec accessories for the upcoming Sonic small car.
In the case of the 2012 Sonic, a direct competitor for the Fiesta, Z-Spec accessories include a ground effects kit, a unique exhaust tip, spoiler, mirror caps, grille surrounds, graphics kits and either 16- or 17-inch paint alloy wheels for the exterior. Inside, Z-Spec accessories will cover aluminum sport pedals and sill plates for a minor cosmetic upgrade from the standard car.
“The new Z-Spec accessories reinforce Sonic’s fun, youthful spirit,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “Customization is particularly important with the customers we believe will gravitate toward the Sonic, and we want to help them make their vehicle look exactly the way they want as easily as possible.”
What Chevy means is that they realize that the aftermarket deals with billions of dollars every year, and now the OEMs are looking to get a share of the pie by allowing customers to customize their vehicles before they even take it home, and in many cases, roll the modifications into the car payment as well. This route can be win-win for customers, dealers and automakers alike, as it allows owners to customize their vehicles right away, and now dealers and automakers are getting a piece of the pie as well.
One of the more popular accessories offered by automakers in recent years has been in the form of graphics kits, of which many options are available for the Z-Spec Sonic. Chevy will offer “Black Out” or “White Out” kits, which either use white or black to accent and fade out from the vehicle’s factory color.
Other details include the fact that the ground effects kit comes with a front fascia extension, rocker panel extensions, rear fascia extension and silver exhaust tip. Buyers can opt for the full list of upgrades, or individual changes, which can then be installed by the Chevy dealer where the vehicle is purchased.
