Chevrolet Volt makes the leap from concept to production model; GM’s Lutz drives lithium-ion Volt mule

Although the Chevrolet Volt has obviously been under development for some time now, General Motors has officially given the extended-range electric vehicle the green light. Until now, the Volt was only considered a concept. Moreover, we can expect to see the road-going version of the Volt “in the very near future.”

GM CEO Rick Wagoner made the announcement at the company’s annual meeting earlier this week. “The Chevy Volt is a go,” said Wagoner. “We believe this is the biggest step yet in our industry’s move away from our historic, virtually complete reliance on petroleum to power vehicles.” Wagoner added that a production version of the Volt would be revealed “in the very near future,” seemingly confirming rumors that the Volt will be unveiled at October’s Paris Motor Show.

In other Volt news, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz recently had the opportunity to drive a lithium-ion powered Volt mule and reported the experience on the company’s corporate blog. Although the test mule “wasn’t calibrated properly,” Lutz was still impressed with the Volt’s performance. He loved the instant torque of the electric motor, but lamented the fact that there was no roar of an internal combustion engine — even joking that GM’s “friends at XM Satellite Radio may have to start an Internal Combustion Channel.”

But all joking aside, Lutz realized as he passed gas station with $4 a gallon fuel on his way to the Milford proving grounds just how important the Volt is to America. But it sounds like the Volt is well on its way to production and we can’t wait to see the final product.

Wise man Murphy said “believe 50% of what you see and none what you hear or read”. When I see Volt in Chevy showroom for 38K with range of 60 mi on electricity alone, I’ll somewhat believe it. Right now, it’’s nice to hear that Lutz is still passing gas and jokes.

“Lutz drives Lithium-ion mule..” Is this why GM is buying a NiMH battery maker?? We won’t see lithium for some time…only NiMH for now I predict. Get ready for a delay due to the batteries.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen… Ahem.. Thank you. Anyways “Lutz realized as he passed gas station with $4 a gallon fuel on his way to the Milford proving grounds just how important the Volt is to America” He should have realized that a lot sooner than that. But good to see that the Volt is finally getting on track.

You guys are too funny. Perhaps we should all start the day with a hit of Vancouver’s finest to mellow the festivities somewhat.

jdasch1: looks to me like GM is following Toyotas lead and plans on offering both types of batteries in the short and long term.

Personally I’ve always HATED the noise from gas engines. As far as I’m concerned tires are too noisy. I know I’m a very small minority in this. I just never have gotten the fascination and appear of loud cars. I didn’t put playing cards in the spokes of my bicycle either.

yes you are in the very LOW minority here, how can you hate to hear a gas engine? and TIRES are too noisy? are you kidding me, what kind of stripped out car do you drive? tires only make noise if the road is broken up or pot holes are all over the place like pimples on a hookers a$$- even when this car is built i’m sure you Sabon will complain once you get run over by a Volt and complain you didn’t hear the car coming since there was no engine noise and the tires didn’t make enough noise either for your satisfaction……… and Jay Leno’s chin owns all

Deanster: Coal. It’s dirt cheap and, while dirty, is a lot cleaner to burn than most people realize. That’s followed by Nuclear and Natural Gas (most is Domestic, some is foreign-sourced).

I’m about as tired of hearing about the volt as I am the Camaro. And Deanster, ya, I’m sure some people see electricity as this magical thing that comes out of a plug in their wall. No regard to how it’s actually created. None the less, I feel having different types cars (hybrid, flexfuel, hydrogen, etc.) should be a good thing. Less reliance on one particular fuel/source to power them. Also varying degrees of pollution for the different types.

Hydrogen is never going to happen. Flexfuel/e85 is already dead; someone finally did the math and figured out that turning corn into fuel is an absolutely idiotic waste of resources (and that the entire crop of corn made in the US turned into ethanol would make less than 12% of US fuel demands for that year.) Electric is going to be the only alternative to gasoline and diesel.

1. Ethanol can be produced from sugar, algae, and other things. These will supplant corn as a source (see Brazil).
2. Hydrogen will happen. The Govmnt has to ensure the infrastructure will be in place first. (how about instead of a windfall profits tax on oil companies we force them to put Hydrogen Pumps at all their stations?) The vehicles are already in use.

You’re welcome.

Yes electricity magically comes out of the wall.

Another place it can come from is solar panels that you can install on the roof of your house and charge up your electric car.

If you put a few more of them on your house, and LOCK IN your costs for electricity, as electricity goes up in price you won’t have to worry about it. You’ll be powering your electric car and at least part of your house with your solar panels. Even in the cloudy Seattle this is VERY effective. Not as effective as sunny places but you would be surprised.

The environment is only a side benefit here. Why chain yourself forever to fuel pumps or the electric company when you can reduce or drastically reduce your dependence on them and your slavery to their prices. YOU CAN do something about it!!!

—-

Roads do NOT have to be in bad shape for tires to be noisy. Only the very newest roads are somewhat quiet. Ask the tire industry. There are many ways to make tires quiet. Hardly anyone asks for it though so they don’t put much effort into it.

jumpoffit - If you like noisy vehicles, you can get a sound system in your car and turn up the stupid gas engine noise as much as you want. Please just sound proof your car so that only you have to put up with it. We REALLY don’t care what music you listen to or what your car engine sounds like.

I’m sorry but I do NOT want to be suckered into the same fuel (as compared to gas) station bit that oil companies have been pulling for the last hundred years. If you think that hydrogen or ethanol is going to be less expensive at the pump, then I’ve got LOTS of bridges and water front property to sell you.

IT’S THE OIL COMPANIES that want you to be suckered into alternate fuels you have to go to a pump to buy.

Disclaimer. I am not in the solar panel business and I don’t own any stock in companies connected to that industry. I’d just like to see people take control of their own lives and stop be screwed over by the oil industry.

NOPE!!! Your wrong buddy! That’s why I said I want the Feds to run it so prices can be controlled! It could be like just another branch of the government like the post office or something. They do it in other countries and there prices are kept low. But they WON’T do it here because the Republicans ALWAYS want to turn everything over to big business!

No, not the way the Dems work, even though the parties are two halves of the same coin, they still have different bases. The stereotype for Republicans has been that they are for big business. However many owners of big business have links to the Dems, such as George Soros and the ilk. Some big business people prefer giving to both parties, to have friends with whoever wins. In the end the Republicans are moving towards big government slowly, while the Dems prefer to do it quickly. I agree with dialm4speed, we have too much government intervention and too much reliance on the government. It used to be that Americans were self reliant, indpendent, believed in self determination and such, but that is changing as we hand more power to the government.
