GM offers extended bumper-to-bumper warranties

The optional warranties extend to five years or 60,000 miles for Chevrolet and GMC.

General Motors claims to be the first automaker to offer 'true' optional extended bumper-to-bumper warranties.

The standard limited bumper-to-bumper warranty for Chevrolet and GMC products is three years or 36,000 miles. Purchasing add-on coverage bumps the terms to five years or 60,000 miles.

For Buick and Cadillac vehicles, the factory four-year/50,000 mile warranty is extended to six years and 70,000 miles.

Notably, the automaker has allowed dealers to set the prices. The company expects the extended warranties to add $1,000 to $2,000 per vehicle. It is unclear if dealers are restricted from bumping the price even higher.

GM may be unique in offering optional extended coverage, but some other automakers already offer similar warranty terms without any upsell charges. Volkswagen leads the pack with six-years/72,000 miles, while Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mitsubishi and Jaguar vehicles come with five-years/60,000 miles.
