Chevrolet's latest Spark subcompact has failed to hit the 40mpg mark. The EPA released official fuel economy ratings for the 2013 Chevrolet Spark earlier this week on its Web site. The 40mpg mark has become the new target for automakers in recent years - albeit strictly for marketing purposes in some cases - but the pint-size Chevy Spark has fallen just short of the industry's new Holy Grail. The EPA rated the five-speed manual version of the Spark at 32/38mpg city/highway and the four-speed automatic model at 28mpg in the city and 37mpg on the highway. Both models make use of an 85 horsepower 1.2L four-cylinder. Although somewhat disappointing figures - the much larger Chevrolet Cruze matches the Spark's highway rating - the Spark does stack up well against its competition. With a combined rating of 34mpg for the five-speed manual model, the Spark falls just a couple of MPGs short of the Scion iQ and smart fortwo and bests the Fiat 500 by 4mpg. The Spark is also one of the cheapest mini cars to buy with a starting price of just $12,955. Look for the Spark to arrive in Chevy showrooms later this summer.
