Tony Posawatz, a key leader in the development of the Chevrolet Volt, has announced his retirement from General Motors. Posawatz has been in charge of the entire Volt program since March 2006.

Posawatz, 52, was assigned to lead the Volt project in March of 2006 - well before the plug-in made its first public debut as a concept at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2007. Posawatz has held the position of Volt line director ever since.

Posawatz has spent the last 30-years working in various capacities at GM. Before taking over the Volt program Posawatz was a planning director for full-size trucks and also lead the development of the original Chevrolet Avalanche in 2002.

Posawatz isn't heading into retirement quite yet, though, as the Detroit-resident says he plans to get back into the automotive business after some time off. Although no specific company has been tipped, Posawatz told Automotive News that he would like to work "in the area of automotive innovation and very likely in electrification."
