While the Prius isn’t exactly known for its sexy curves, it didn’t take long for the most popular hybrid in America to also become the most popular status symbol of the wealthy elite – particularly in Hollywood.
But times appear to be changing, according to a Fox News report, which reveals some startling numbers surrounding the Chevrolet Volt – like the fact that it’s buyer has an average income of $175,000!
With the Volt finding homes with clearly affluent buyers, it has also managed a surge in sales as of late, jumping some 240 percent month-to-month from 302 units in August to 723 vehicles sold in September.
While those sales figures likely do little to worry Toyota with its strong-selling Prius, the fact is Chevy is reporting 80 percent of buyers are that of the conquest type, with the majority of those trading in a Toyota Prius.
Stealing Prius buyers or not, Chevy is currently producing 150 examples of the Volt per production day, but selling closer to 24 per day in the month (or close to 40 per production day), not nearly enough to pose any sort of risk of dethroning the Prius as the top-selling eco-car.
Although, with an average buyer income of $175,000, it just might become the top status symbol car on the red carpet.
