Tesla can be compared to the Ferrari of the environmentally friendly crowd, but there is little else in the world of EVs or hybrids that can be even mentioned in the same breath as a performance marque. However, General Motors will look to change that as its forthcoming Chevrolet Volt could fill the niche of the BMW of the eco-friendly segment.
Speaking at a recent event in Detroit, Andrew Farah, the Volt’s chief engineer, revealed the range-extending electric vehicle will have a much sportier driving dynamic than its closest rivals. “Our chassis is much more sporty than either of the other vehicles,” he said when asked how the Volt would compare to the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight , according to Edmunds.
The Volt will ride on a version of GM’s Delta platform, the same that underpins the Chevrolet Cruze .
The Volt has entered the final stretch of its development phase with pre-production prototypes now running around the streets of America. Although the final product promises to be sportier than its hybrid counterparts, work on the Volt’s suspension is far from over. Farah says GM engineers continue to work on the car’s ride height and spring rate.
