As if anyone needed further proof that China’s rapidly expanding economy is helping the country become a global economic powerhouse: Lamborghini’s CEO said recently that the sports car manufacturer might sell more cars in China than the United States next year.
“I think it is even going to become the number one market already this year,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Reuters.
For China to overtake the U.S., Lamborghini will need to be able to deliver more of its Aventador high-performance sports cars this year. The automaker says that its plans to expand its dealership network from the current 14 outlets in China to 20 by year’s end will help.
Having more dealerships in China will at least help Lamborghini find more buyers, if not more vehicles. For an automaker like Volkswagen-owned Lamborghini, the problem isn’t finding buyers, it’s being able to build more vehicles.
In China, Lamborghini has found a bigger connection with female buyers, who tend to stick with brands more than males. This, says, Winkelmann, is a major long-term advantage to the market.
“This is a good sign because you can get old with them and this is something we have to take care of – that they don’t leave the brand when they get older,” he said.
