Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corporation, which is currently negotiating with General Motors to buy the Hummer off road truck brand, could locate its headquarters in the Detroit area, according to Hummer’s spokesman.
Nick Richards of Hummer told the Detroit News that the Chinese company would initially look to employ somewhere around 100 people in a Detroit headquarters, eventually topping out at 300 employees.
The headquarters facility would operate much like other Detroit automakers, albeit in a much-reduced capacity. Design, engineering, product planning, marketing and finance would all be handled in the company’s main headquarters. It’s not known how many existing Hummer employees would be recruited by the Chinese owners away from GM.
Michigan’s Economic Development Authority has offered up the $20.6 million in tax credits over 10 years to Sichuan Tengzhong. The state estimates that nearly 650 other related jobs would be created by Hummer creating a Detroit headquarters.
