Chinese-owned Hummer to be headquartered in Detroit?

09/23/2009, 8:59 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corporation, which is currently negotiating with General Motors to buy the Hummer off road truck brand, could locate its headquarters in the Detroit area, according to Hummer’s spokesman.

Nick Richards of Hummer told the Detroit News that the Chinese company would initially look to employ somewhere around 100 people in a Detroit headquarters, eventually topping out at 300 employees.

The headquarters facility would operate much like other Detroit automakers, albeit in a much-reduced capacity. Design, engineering, product planning, marketing and finance would all be handled in the company’s main headquarters. It’s not known how many existing Hummer employees would be recruited by the Chinese owners away from GM.

Michigan’s Economic Development Authority has offered up the $20.6 million in tax credits over 10 years to Sichuan Tengzhong. The state estimates that nearly 650 other related jobs would be created by Hummer creating a Detroit headquarters.

Hey NMOFGM,
Does this mean its your patriotic duty to buy a Hummer if you were born in China?
GM. AN American Revolution

that’s not funny… at all. at least the **** he says is slightly funny.

Nice to see they are going to be keeping management states side, though it may also help it appear that its still an American owned company

yeah man reminds me of that movie, talladega nights, you know the one with will ferrell… the friend takes his wife and then moves into his own house and then calls him one night to ask him how the remote works hahaha! that’s what happened, they took your american wife, moved to america and will run the whole deal right here! not an insult but not nice either…

NMOFGM is not funny or intelligent in the least bit. I liked it better when he was hiding under a rock while we Americans bailed out his company.

I’m sure GM won’t mind having a few people cut from the payroll to migrate over with Hummer.

To their population, this move gives them a prestige status being headquartered in US and in particular in Detroit. End result, raise the company profile therefore can demand better price for their products in the future.
To the population in N America, this move is in your face – I am running your managers, MBAs, factory workers around and I have plenty of money to waste.
Listen, I can’t stand the ad for Equinox on the right hand side of this panel. This is so misleading – and I think someone had pointed it out point blank a while ago. You cannot just quote highway mileage numbers and compare to Escape Hybrid. Will the GM marketing genius dare to publish the mediocre city mileage for this run of the mill vehicle in the ad as well?

Very good news that they have decided to keep the jobs here in America. Big question is whether they will start to build some in China and import.

My guess is that they will continue to do all the work and building here in our country for awhile until they perhaps design a compact H4 and MAYBE import it.

This looks like it is turning out to be a more American company than all the imports and perhaps even more American than the big 3 (which do have some basic platform engineering work done outside of the US).

Just being financed by a Chinese firm (hell, we are all being financed by China anyway). Of course the profits go back overseas just like the rest of the imports.

Sorcerer, why cant they just post the HWY MPG in the add, they are trying to pull people in, anyone serious about buying a new vehicle will look at both numbers on their own or ask the dealer. all they have done is claim best highway numbers, advertising will show the best or most ‘flashy’ aspects.. get off their back, everyone else does it too

Exactly as long as it’s a fact. Then GM can claim it. Even if it gets worse city mileage. And as Andy said all the other manufacturers do it was well.

Yay, now Detroit is going to be even worse to drive in… Can’t wait…

I think that shows good part on the Chinese firm purchasing Hummer.

Andy, you are right. I am in lousy mood today. My car broke down and got towed. Looked like I didn’t tighten up the gas cap at the gas station when I drove back from Newark. The tow tuck guy told me that may have damaged my fuel pump. Why?

Detroit has always been viewed as the center automotive industry so there is no surprise that the chinks want to be accosiated with that. They should make sure their employees are U.S. citizens rather than employing a bunch of immigrants as cheap labor. Still no happy about the money going back to China.

Be American, buy American. Buy GM.

Unfunny, unintelligent, not witty, and now unsurprisingly somewhat xenophobic?

Amazing! I wonder what kind of idiotic trolling response will NMOFGM come up with next?

On another point: I’m getting sick and tired of this “American Revolution” crap. At least the new GM is smart enough to realize now that selling cars with idiotic tag-lines to appeal to flag waving retards who constantly scream “America is #1!” does not exactly work all the time when it comes to selling cars. Too bad NMOFGM will never realize that.

georgetang, This Chinese firm is only purchasing the civilian division of Hummer.

AM General who made the original Hummer, and who manufactures the HUMVEE shouldn’t be affected by this. Although their civilian dealer networks may be.

isnt it the AM General plant that builds the current hummer line up? though, i think the H3 is built along side the Colorado, but atleast the H2 is assembled by AM Gen. right? so maybe they will still be contracted by the chinese to continue

Observing the comments it seems that ignorence is bliss, most of your “American” vehicles are not made in america for one thing. Note that Hummer is built in America by Americans. For some reason this aggression towards Hummers is basically those who lack any inteligence and can’t seem to compare other if not worse vehicles. I have 2 Hummers and to know that what I’ve got with those vehicles to equal that capability on your “standard/comparable pickup” it would cost allot more and have to be purchased from the aftermarket. I don’t here you all crying over Saturn brand. Last time I checked and it is a free country. This is a strategical move by China to get into the US Auto Market which they so desperatly need to get the technology to compete. As you haven’t notice how Japanese are faring here with plants in several states. Plus the unions are going to kill the American Auto makers not the consumer.
