Chinese VW to come to North America

07/19/2007, 8:42 AM

By Andrew Ganz

On the heels of Chrysler’s joint venture with Chery that will see the two automakers combine efforts on vehicles that will eventually be U.S.-bound, Volkswagen has announced that its venture with Shanghai Auto will result in a vehicle for North American consumers.

According to Reuters, VW and Shanghai Auto will produce a car aimed at the global market. Shanghai Auto and VW have a relationship that dates back more than 20 years, which has helped solidify VW in the ever-growing Chinese automotive market.

Everything we can find on the Shanghai Auto plants says that the cars have attained VW-acceptable levels of quality, but Chinese auto production isn’t measured with the careful precision that customers world-wide often expect. Currently, Shanghai Auto produces a variety of VW-branded cars, including its own version of the Passat. No word yet on the details of the car that would arrive in North America.

This comes just days after rumors of VW opening a North American plant, something that seems less and less likely now by the day.

Just when we thought VW was trying to improve their image. I am sure that VW’s reliability will suffer dramatically.

If it’s a VW and cheaper cause it’s made somewhere where labor’s cheap, then it may just be a seller in US.

Unless they’re making a Scirocco in China to bring here (which they wont be doing), people wont want it. Well, at least smart people wont want it.

“Acceptable” VW quality? We all know what that means. All those Mexican Golfs with the transmissions falling out while driving. And the electrical short circuits within the first two months of ownership.

Get Real

Quality Control in China is at the end of a gun.

You complain, you get the gun.

You get it wrong, you get the gun.

You want a union, you get the gun.

For VW this is going back to the 1940’s, they love it.
