Though Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne stated last month that the company was only “considering” a five-door hatchback, we now have photographic evidence that the hatch, which will be dubbed the Chrysler 100, is in fact well along in its development.

Likely based on the same Alfa Romeo-derived chassis as the upcoming Dodge Dart, the 100 will be positioned below the 200 sedan in Chrysler’s model lineup. Though details are still scarce, several rumors claim that the 100 will be positioned as something of a premium model (though not to the extent of the Buick Verano) with a relatively luxurious interior and a healthy amount of standard equipment. If this proves true, Chrysler could choose to put only the Dart’s top-spec engine offerings, the 2.0 and 2.4-liter “Tigershark†four-cylinders, under the hood.

Though the mule photographed cold-weather testing is clad in widened Alfa Giuletta bodywork, its distinctive Chrysler grille foreshadows the unique sheetmetal it will receive when it reaches production. The extended rear bumper hints at a large rear overhang and and a spacious cargo area.

Expect the Chrysler 100 to hit the market in one to three years wearing a sub-$20,000 price tag.
