Chrysler unveiled a range-extended electric concept car, the Chrysler 200C EV, that heavily previews the replacement for the unloved Sebring sedan. The concept, which Chrysler says is a look at its “new DNA,” features a 40-mile all-electric range and a 400-mile overall range from its electric and conventional powertrains.
Chrysler strongly hinted that the 200C is intended for production based on a “proven platform,” likely either the current Sebring platform or a shortened version of the 300C’s more modern platform. Chrysler said that as the 200C EV currently sits, it’s powered by a 268-horsepower gas-electric hybrid powertrain likely based on Chrysler’s upcoming Phoenix V6. The automaker says it’ll hit 60 mph in about seven seconds
Inside, the 200C EV features a heavy emphasis on in-car connectivity, including a “passenger tablet” that passengers can use to surf the Internet and upload media. The system also links smartphones to the car, so a potential owner could start, adjust the windows and locks and set the interior temperature from a phone.
The interior is obviously not production-ready, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the production-intent model be released at another auto show later this season.

I’m willing to bet this basic design has been on the drawing board since the previous generation Sebring. The design cues are almost unmistakable. The tail lights are almost a dead ringer for my ‘06 and the front end as well as the profile are a natural progression as well. This of course begs the question why they didn’t go this route in the first place.

The front end looks a Lot like the Opel Insignia, but I love the rest of the design. If they can make the exterior of the production car look exactly like this they shouldn’t have any problem getting people in the show room. Then of course, they’ll need to have a serious attempt at an interior to sell people on it.
In the past Chrysler was the one company that never really dumbed down their exterior styling from concept to production – I hope they stick to that trend with this model.

Gundy you took the words out of my mouth, “Not blow-me-away-GOOD, but not bad.” similar to the new Taurus and Buick, subtle and attractive and not too much in your face. But i think johnnycanuck is right, this had to have been in the design dept for a while, and its possible that it just never got approved because (from what i read, maybe here on LLN?) the current Sebring was approved by daimler by phone conversatations and was never actually looked at, physically. remember that soon after the sebring was on sale daimler also put Chrysler on sale. daimler just didnt care for the sebring, or future of Chrysler likely after the decision was certain they were getting rid of chrysler. This might explain why ‘that’ and not ‘this’…

This looks incredible compared to the current Sebring.. and it’s obvious this is thr route Chrysler should have taken, both in the mini-300 styling and in naming it 200 to capitalize on the 300’s popularity. The problem is that this concept is proportioned like a RWD vehicle with short front overhang and a lot of space between the front wheels and the doors.. if they bring it to production on the existing Sebring FWD platform it will end up looking a LOT worse.

It looks good. Frankly, not what I was expecting from CHRYSLER here. This would actually sell fairly well. The current Sebring looks classy but frumpy lacking any sense of youthfulness. This car looks like the better car CHRYSLER needs to and wants to build. This is, blasphemously, an all-around attractive car from CHYSRLER that is not a VIPER.
While many will and I would agree to the more reasonable comparisons. My first thought was I was looking at a dressed up Hyundai Genesis, but shortened to feel a bit like a Lexus IS350. Comparing it to an OPEL Insignia might feel about right though, given that car is not likely to come to the US, I can not complain to that.
CHRYSLER was known in the 1990s for making a concept car and bringing it to market very quickly. With few exceptions, not withstanding those that clearly were the product of unbridled imagination, that is what happened. That fell apart when MERCEDES-BENZ. But with the real need to make and move product, make a real identity for itself, and stop being a bit player, CHYRSLER is in a “do or die” position. They are not going to waste valuable time and resource on developing cars they have no intention of building when all they have to do is look out the window and see what we want.
zoomzoomer,
I gotta hope too that this car is NOT built on that platform. Frankly if they did and it got out, the stigma of the SEBRING and AVENGER would rub negatively on this car. Hopefully, stories of CHRYSLER not having engineers to pull something like this off are largely untrue and the car is on and would/will be built on a new smaller RWD/AWD platform, much in keeping with the Mercedes C-class maybe.
Then again, Maybe this was something they wanted to drop on us quickly and suddenly to grab maximum attention. But all they have to do is give a date certain for the car and that is all the press they will need.

zoomzoomer, I was so busy admiring the styling I didn’t even grasp the connection in calling it the 200. That is absolutely what they should name this as the Sebring moniker has been tarnished beyond redemption thanks to the abortion that currently haunts the back rows of dealerships and rental car fleets. Good call.

If I’m reading that cutaway correctly it is a RWD car, much like the FISKER Karma.
The Generator is up front. The Engine is likely a motorcycle sized engine and that charges the battery and the runs the motor on the rear. The motor is probably around 200Kw or in the area of 275 hp. Well, in the realm of what has been discussed do far.
What was described above it the likely near-term production car.
Either way, they took some useful and hard lessons from the Imperial (You can see it in the 3/4 front view), 300 Coupe (the Fenders), and Nassau (tastefully “less can be more” and the grill layout) concept cars – plus a little BMW (the trunk lid mainly). there is barely a single bad angle on this car, like the Infiniti G coupe. The sedan looks good but looks a bit strange.
*Took a while to see the pictures. The site was running slow through my service.
I hope the next 300 takes the same lessons to heart.
Can’t wait to see what they will do for a CHRYSLER “100″. Hopefully they will drop the “PT” nameplate when their speculated redo is made on the Caliber platform.
I’d love to see them try to do a CHRYSLER “400″ just for show someday.

Do you think your the only person that thinks this car resembles an Opel? (however the comment above that said it reminded him of a Malibu needs to clearly compare) Honestly it’s a fresh good start for Chrysler, who ever disagrees is simply bias, and will never grow-up.

This is exactly what Chrysler needs!: A RWD midsize sedan built on a shortened version of the LX platform. The design is simply elegant and totally appropriate for the Chrysler brand. I would love to see this car sitting in Chrysler showrooms. It would go a long way in restoring the premium luster back to the brand (something that the current Sebring could singlehandedly destroy). What took them so long! They made us suffer through rumors of possibly producing the ugly (and totally unnecessary) Imperial Concept and then actually producing the hideous current Sebring. This car could go a long way in restoring my faith in Chrysler again. Great job on a gorgeous concept that will hopefully transform into an equally awesome production car!

This is a very, very nice “modern” yet elegant design. Furthermore, there’s nothing outlandish about the execution that wouldn’t make this more-or-less production ready. Except…it’s not production ready, which is too bad b/c Chrysler desperately needs this, or something similar. I imagine its a sneak peak at an upcoming production sedan, and hopefully the final design is very similar to this.

Too bad this wasn’t the body style for when the current Sebring came out a couple of years ago. Would have saved Chrysler a lot of embarassment (and maybe even market share).
And work on those mechanicals, too. I test drove a current Sebring V6 over the summer. If the cheap plastic interior doesn’t get you, the poor ride quality will. It was the least “tight” built vehicle I test drove, and believe me, I test drove a whole bunch this summer.

I like the looks of it. And I agree with the comments that (1) it’s at least two years late, and (2) any production car that descends from this should not be named “Sebring.” That name has too much bad baggage attached to it.
I hope this signals the direction Chrysler’s design is heading, as I also think the 300 is now looking dated. This car represents a fresh design style without going so far as to appear to be an updated LH.

johnny and blakkarr.. I agree with you both completely. My fear is that this concept is actually just a shrunken version of the redesgined 300 due in about 18 months, which is great news for the future 300 but still doesn’t give Chrysler a proper competitor in the mid-size or hybrid markets anytime soon. Unfortunately, if Chrysler does develop a proper successor to the Sebring that looks anything like this, their cash situation would likely force them to use the existing FWD platform.

I am thrilled by this concept handsome, bold and strong looks, it’s filled with killer instincts. Been waiting for a car like this for a long, long time and hope I don’t have to wait much longer. I held on to my 99 silver Stratus because I was never excited about any other car till now. The 200C has changed all that and the little bit of adrenaline in me is pumping mad.
Chrysler, please do not mess up the design, it looks so rich and hot, keep it as is in the production version. Do whatever it takes to make this design work as is for production. You have hit the nail on its head with this one and it will certainly sell like hot bread. Bring this to the showrooms now and sales will skyrocket. There is no other car like it. But make sure it’s affordable with most of the popular features as standard or affordable upgrades.
I will go crazy in the meantime. So pretty soon there will be a mad driver behind the super sleek 200C. Even the concept platinum/graphite silver metallic color is my favorite. This car is definitely an extension of my personality.
