2011 Chrysler 300: official teaser

02/11/2010, 6:15 PM

By Mark Kleis

Although Chrysler did not have much to share at the Chicago Auto Show, we need snap a picture of the upcoming 2011 300C’s front fascia off of a presentation by its designer, Ralph Gilles. In addition to designing the 300C, Gilles has now been named the head of the Dodge division as well.

Although Gilles did not reveal any new ground breaking information today, we did get a fairly revealing shot of what to expect on the front of the next 300C. Chrysler previewed the next 300’s interior at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

In addition to the new image we captured off of the projector, our spies have also captured test mules with extensive camo covering their upcoming nose job. The camouflaged mule looks to have the 2011 front end grafted onto a current 300C SRT8 body to conduct airflow testing. A new motor, along with the new “LY” chassis may also be underneath the body.

The LY chassis will be a heavy rework of the current LX chassis. However, some current components will be carried over. Fiat is said be planning future cars on the LY platform as well.

The reigning fuel-efficient champ of the LX-platform stable is the 26 mpg (highway) 2.7-liter Dodge Charger, but the next crop of LX-based vehicles will likely top the 30 mpg mark.

In order to improve fuel economy, Chrysler engineers will focus on aerodynamics, axle ratios and drivetrains. At the heart of the improvements will be Chrysler’s all-new Phoenix family of V6 engines. The new Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 will replace both V6s currently offered in the LX cars, improving both fuel economy and performance. Look for the Pentastar family of engines to feature Chrysler’s fuel-saving MDS cylinder deactivation technology, as well as take advantage of Fiat’s Multiair technology. Output will be rated at 280 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

But the new Pentastar V6 won’t be the only big news for the 2011 Charger and 300. Chrysler is also planning to replace the cars’ four and five-speed automatic transmissions with a new eight-speed unit, rivaling Lexus for the most cogs in the business.

Watch for the new 300 to go on sale in the fall or winter of 2010.

Yes headlights look like an Audi. Who cares about the grill?! Buyers are just going to change it anyway to make it look like a bentley or some other high luxury brand.

Everyone is going with LED headlamps these days, so I guess all new cars are now “Audis”. Ive heard nothing but praise about the new 300 and Charger from all the critics that have seen it and I cannot wait to see it in the flesh myself.

if this and the new charger get over 30mpg with a 280hp V6 in a large car (not midsized) that will be a good selling point. not to many large rwd cars out there that get over 30mpg. will be interesting to see how the other engines will perform.

if they can redo there midsized cars well with good mpg like this, could relay turn things around for them.

head lights do look like they are from an A8

I would like to know more about the LY-platform. I thought it was the underpinning of the CHALLENGER, but given that the Challenger weighs in at 4200lb, about even with the sedans, I have to think that the CHALLENGER is built on the LX.

Shows how much I’ve been paying attention… or how little the CHALLENGER has been worthy of attention.

At any rate, the front end looks good. The Headlights are an easy “looks like an AUDI” dig, but it is more and evolution of the current headlights. I just have to wonder how much of the car has been rounded out and smoothed over, in terms of style. I do like the new CHARGER.

Also… WHY IS CHRYSLER WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO SHOW US WHAT THEY CAR IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE? Granted GM tends to get on the horn and stay on it way too early these days. We get it you have something awesome coming up… after everyone stops caring. FORD does tend to do things about right though. Although I wish they had more more profound products to espouse.

But with CHRYSLER needing to drum up serious business and I have to think their is going to be a seismic transformation there, why not leak more news, show more of the new CHARGER, the GRAND CHEROKEE (J-GC). One reason, I would think, CHRYSLER is taking it on the nose is that they look like they have nothing. We would like to know something of what’s going on behind the curtain.

While a bit different, the grille effect reminds me of the waterfall/klingon effect on the grille of the Genesis sedan.

Hope Chrysler is sticking close to the concept since that was quite the looker.

wait a minute:

300C – 2.7L V6 : get top 30 MPG, but what about the 3.6L V6 and 5.7/6.1L V8?

Ford Taurus – 3.5L V6 : get top 28 MPG.
Ford Taurus – 3.5L V6 TT : get top 25 MPG.

I believe both vehicle is about almost the same size, but with Chrysler need to do better then what they did right now. Cause this is not good enough MPG, and company like Chrysler got so much taxpayer money to creat a piece of crap like this, it just not good enough. SHAME ON CHRYSLER, and hope GM is not going to do the same thing after they have got so much our taxpayer money.

No seriously, im getting excited. The design looks crisp and compact, and not cartoonish, goofy, choppy, or oversized. Can’t wait to see the entire model. I hope the chopped roof goes away for something more traditional.

Looks like I might have to put that Regal GS on hold! I’m gonna wait for the next 300C with the next generation Hemi or Pentistar V-6. 30 mpg sounds pretty good for even a base model, considering these are full-size cars.

I’m not too crazy about the Audi-style headlights, but this was something Chrysler designed 3 years ago with the 200C concept headlights, so I don’t think its a direct Audi ripoff.

One thing is for sure, the interior is a major improvement.

Ralph Gilles should be CEO by this time next year.

I like Ralph Gilles… every time I’ve had the opportunity to hear him speak I’ve been impressed. I suppose Mr. Marchionne is too seeing as he’s now the head guy at Dodge.

I’ve brought up the same arguments as Blakkarr and teahead before about Chrysler’s reluctance to show us more of their new stuff… even went so far as to single out that as my lone criticism of Marchionne thus far. Chrysler didn’t break a million last year and Sergio has stated that 1.1 is the magic number this year. That’s a lot of mostly tired product to flog before the last quarter. He’s doing everything he can lipstick wise but that may not be enough. We know what’s coming but the sheeple for the most part don’t. Tough call.

As for the 300… the shot of the front looks good. The rest of it has to look even better. And I’m sure Mr. Gilles and Mr. Marchionne are well aware of that fact.

You make a valid argument. They’ve taken alot of flack for not being more forthcoming about upcoming designs. My guess is they are being very secretive and protectionist for a reason. It might have something to do with the fact they are trying to pull off a complete overhaul of the brand within a 1-2 year timespan – something which has been nearly impossible…until now, perhaps?

BuyUSA, from every indication that’s their goal. It would be something though wouldn’t it if they can pull it off. Marchionne has said that in two years he’s either going to be Fiat’s boss or Chrysler’s… I just hope there’s enough left of him after this ordeal no matter which one he picks.

2.7 is gone, it’s just the 3.6L Pentastar and the V8s. Are you satisfy now? This “piece of crap” made by your tax money will get 30mpg with the V6, now go find something else to whine about.

BTW, the EcoBoost is quite the gas hog. Real world mileage had been pretty much identical to the current 5.7L V8. Maybe Ford should have borrowed some of your tax money to improve that piece of crap too.

***Note to others: I don’t think the EcoBoost is a piece of turd, just using FSVT_ROCK’s terminology and thinking is all.

For somebody who hates Fiat (and what former Fiat owner doesn’t), I really like the looks of this car.

But I like the planned 8-speed auto transmission even more. Because consumers (and many LLN posters) don’t understand certain basic facts about automobiles, car companies are able to get away with offering transmissions with merely 4 speeds. Fortunately, the need for companies to produce fuel-efficient vehicles is causing “gear inflation.”

I think this will be a good design knowing of Ralph Gilles’ style. He made some really tasteful updates to RAM, and seeing that the “1st Gen” 300 was his major undertaking in the first place, I would expect no less care in the upcoming car. And I know that Chrysler did some heavy research on interior materials and targeting feel and higher quality perception. Get the popcorn….

I have to agree with Blakkarr, Chrysler really needs to ramp up products they have in the pipeline. The 300’s update will be significant, but we probably won’t see anything truly dramatic until they replace the Sebring/Avenger twins with the 200C. The patent drawings have already been confirmed and hopefully only Chrysler gets the model to further separate it from Dodge. Since Fiat is introducing some of it’s models in few years through Chrysler/Dodge, let’s just pray they put the right ones in the deserving lineups.

The headlamps, tail-lamps and grille were switched up by Fiat at the 11th hour. The Cerberus version of the car wasn’t as breath taking as it needed to be apparently. The other thing is they apparently tossed the round tail-lamps from the Charger and added 69-70 Charger esq tails to it.

I have a feeling that interior will not make it to final production.

It most likely will be more dramatic. That’s an OLD picture when Cerberus was running things.

I hope they KEEP the chopped top. That was a very distinguishable feature of the car.
