Chrysler announces locations of 5,000 job cuts

Chrysler just announced that it would eliminate 1,096 at its Belvedere Assembly Plant, and now comes word from the Detroit automaker where its other 3,904 planned cuts will occur. The 5,000 job cuts are part of Chrysler’s Recovery and Transformation plan that was announced last year.

In the Detroit area, Chrysler will eliminated 900 jobs from its Jefferson North Assembly Plant and cut an additional 1,140 positions from its Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. Toledo will lose 780 jobs at its Toledo North Assembly Plant and Chrysler Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario will see 1,000 jobs lost.

The cuts involve union hourly workers.

Nardelli, fine job you’re doin’ there. In the short time you’ve been running the joint you’ve put thousands out of work and figured out that your midsize entries need new interiors.

Any day now you’re liable to realize that stuffing a hemi into everything is not the solution to future CAFE standards.

It’s irritating that people actually expect Chrysler to just change overnight. It is not Nardellini’s fault that Chrysler is the way it is. You can blame Daimler and their bean counters for that. Nardellini and Co. are taking steps to make Chrysler better. As soon as Chrysler was purchased by Cerberus, they set up committees for almost ever aspect of a vehicle, which has yielded “Project D”, which is a complete overhaul of the horrible mess of a vehicle that is the Chrysler Sebring / Dodge Avenger twins. Those cars can not be attributed to the current Chrysler LLC, but rather to Daimler, since they would have been the people to approve it. We will see a little glimpse of the “New Chrysler” in the redesigns Project D brings us, but it will be cars such as the next generation Viper, 300 and (possibly) Demon that show what they can do. To bash Chrysler now for their mistakes is unjustified.

My brother may be one of those let go in Belvidere. Uh, you misspelled it in the article it appears??? (never been there myself).

I had an uncle that worked at Chrysler. He had the most seniority of ANY (Daimler)/Chrysler employee when he retired. The ONLY place he ever worked. 60 years.

No need to offend purdue Deanster. His brother/uncle may have started working there quite a while ago when Chrysler come up with their more innovative ideas like the minivans and K-cars. You know, once Chrysler made the best-looking cars available. I wasn’t around then, but comparing cars from the 50s, 60s, and before then, Chrysler’s designs were great. In fact, Toyoda’s very first car was a complete copy of the Chrysler’s Airflow design

purdue – did your uncle get anything for that? Usually, when there is some insane record set by someone like that, the automaker may give them a free car or something. I hope Chrysler didn’t just offer him the same minimum buy out or something like they have with other workers.

I asked my uncle if they honored him in any way. He said “Huh, you think MANAGEMENT cares about us?”.

And yeah, brother is well enough off, I would think. He has vacation home in Florida. Beats ME….both wife and I are Purdue grads “with skills” and in no way can afford a vacation home (that we don’t rent out), let alone just GO on vacations. :) The UAW does help them out. My parents always asked when I’d get a REAL job or a job with a REAL EMPLOYER whose benefits are good and don’t end at termination/retirement. Many of us never WILL experience that; unfortunately. Even my ex-roommate, who Lee Iaccoca flew up TWICE to talk with him personally, earns his living in the car biz. He’s left Chrysler for Ford, and is involved in establishing Ford’s (red) China plants. Funny, he’s on the other side of the mgmt/labor line, because he could not SPELL to save his soul. (Odd, I have another good friend who’s in (red china) Shanghai and enjoys it, too.)

They should lay off the Transmission design people.
