Chrysler announces new features for 2009 models

04/14/2008, 5:19 PM

By Drew Johnson

Chrysler announced a plethora of new innovations that will be available on 2009 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products. The new technologies will range from a new backup sensor to an all-new hands free communication system similar to Ford’s SYNC.

Atop of the new list of features is an in-car internet connectivity system. Chrysler currently offers similar system as an aftermarket product from its Mopar parts division — which essentially turns the vehicle into a “hot spot” — but the feature should become part of Chrysler’s standard option list in the coming years. The system uses WiFi and 4G connectivity to allow wireless use of the internet, including downloading music and movies.

For 2009, Chrysler will also offer Rear Cross Path — a system designed to help reduce the number of parking lot accidents. The system will be very similar to Ford’s Cross Traffic Alert and will alert drivers of oncoming cars in either direction behind the car.

Also following in Ford’s footsteps, Chrysler will launch its own voice activated driver communication system in 2009. Similar to Ford’s SYNC, Chrysler’s UConnect will allow drivers to input addresses to the navigation system, select satellite radio stations and access voice mail. In addition, the system will automatically download up to 1,000 phone book entries per phone.

Well, hopefully Plastech (the actual plastic manufacturer for interiors of most Domestics) will go into bankruptcy quickly which will allow the Domestics to switch to a different, and hopefully better, manufacturer.

I guess I must be way out there on the fringe of the automaker’s demographics or something because quite often when I’m driving alone I don’t even have the radio on. It’s almost like I’m just enjoying driving for the sake of driving. F*ckin’ wierd, eh?

johnny, I am so with you.
Don’t count Chrysler(Cerberus) out. There was no Cerberus with 8+ billion dollars 30 years ago. The folks who run it did not inherited their coins from trust funds. People who know how to make money usually prevail or at least don’t piss their hard earned money away.
