NEW FUTURE MARKET
  • Chrysler appoints new Fiat North America chief

By Andrew Ganz - Posted March 11th 2010

Three words we haven’t seen together in 25 years – Fiat North America – now have a leader: Chrysler has appointed former Volkswagen and Ford marketing executive Laura Soave to lead the inexpensive Italian brand’s renaissance in the United States and Canada.
Soave will report directly to Fiat chief Sergio Marchionne, who said in a statement that ““Her rich background will serve as a springboard for reintroducing the Fiat brand when it takes to U.S. and Canadian roads this December after more than a 25-year absence.”

She joins Fiat after spending four years at VW, where she had most recently served as the automaker’s General Manager of Experiential Marketing. Prior to working at VW’s North American office, Soave spent about 10 years holding various product marketing positions at Ford Motor Company.

At Fiat, which will be initially developed as a unit of Chrysler, Soave will be tasked with leading the introduction of the Fiat 500 into the North American market later this year. As Head of Fiat Brand for North America, Soave will be directly responsible for ensuring that Fiat is properly integrated into Chrysler’s current North American distribution chain and she will be in charge of all marketing activities.

Shes quite pretty compared to the last woman exec (the one from Saturn that looked like SweetTooth from Twisted Metal)

The 500 could do ok as a niche vehicle, but I don’t see Fiat lasting long in the US or Canada and I still don’t see how Chrysler is going to survive. Perhaps Fiat can eventually sell Jeep to someone, but Chrysler and Dodge appear doomed.

      I would smash.

The strategy here is her attractiveness may help sales by offsetting the poor quality of Fiats.

I haven’t played playstation/twisted metal in probably close to a decade. You just brought back lots of warm memories of me blowing up thumper, axel, and the whole twisted metal crew! My favorite was the cop car – the girl who drove it was super-hot.

General Manager of Experiential Marketing… Huh?

pahammer – sounds like some BS job to me. She was only 12 when Fiat left last time. That’s nuts. But how hoard of a job could it be? It’s only the 500 right now and heck, even Dr. Z would have a hard fvcking that up. Clearly it will be only a niche brand for the forseeable future.

The project she’s most notorius for at VW? The 50 year anniv. Barbie edition Beetle. Really – no joke!

When 1 Country just imports cars for sale in another Country, the “Marketing” is really all there is..and the “Marketing” titles they give out go from very understandable to just plain wacky.

I wish her well, It’ll be all peachy with the Fiat 500 for 6 months…THEN the real work will need to start, thats if she lasts that long under Marchionne.

pahammer, that one had me stumped too. It must be something like ‘human resources’… you know, they give a nice fluffy name to a position whose original title made too much sense.

i would gladly offer her some of my own human resources, if given a chance…

Oh dear you Americans are in for a lot of fun with these cars. Here in Europe they aren’t particularly well regarded reliability wise, and their dealers here are some of the worst in the industry for customer satisfaction. Its only the introduction of the little 500 that may change their fortunes…

I’m sure she gave Sergio a quick little 500 to get the spot.

You guys are nothing but pigs for talking about how you’d “smash,” “take for a ride,” and “do” this woman. Shame on you!!! Seriously though, I wouldn’t mind blowin’ that back-bone out either. :-)

This does not bode well for Fiat — having come from both VW and Ford, her corporate culture is one of mediocrity.

Ok. So she’s in charge of only one car. The Fiat 500. Doesn’t seem too hard. But a chick in charge of a car company segment. That’s such a turn on.
