Chrysler Barracuda to be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson auction

11/30/2007, 10:50 AM

By Drew Johnson

Earlier this year, custom car maker Metalcrafters and Chrysler unveiled a “Barracuda” concept car based on the 2008 Charger at the SEMA show in Las Vegas this week. Though the concept is fully functional and of production quality, the show car is actually a one-off road car specially built by Metalcrafters for a customer. Apparently, that customer had their fill of the custom ‘Cuda and the car will now be put up for auction at a Barrett-Jackson event in January.

Metalcrafters built the original Dodge Challenger show car for Chrysler in 2005. Dodge says it has no plans to give the ‘Cuda the green light for mass production.

The body of the Barracuda Concept is completely made of carbon fiber, with exposed sections on the hood, around the taillights and rear deck lid spoiler. Those portions of the car that are painted are covered in a vivid Lamborghini Pearl Orange.

The interior of the concept is pulled straight from a production Charger SRT8, except for the throw-back pistol grip shifter. The Barracuda rides on 22 inch wheels — front and rear — shod in Pirelli rubber and also features six-piston Brembo brakes.

Power for the ‘Cuda comes from Chrysler’s 6.1L V8 HEMI, although the automaker failed to mention any performance specs.

Chrysler is ****ing itself. The ‘Cuda would be a nice addition, even though it would be under the Chrysler badge. Maybe if the Challenger does well, we could get the more exclusive ‘Cuda.

Instead Chrysler wants its Sebring, and its already again 300 to be its Halo cars.

I wish that Chrysler could come up with some nice interios, this one looks horrible, especially for a low production car!

It just disgusts me at Chrysler arrogance. The plastic looks disgustingly cheap, it’s disfunctional and so bland and boring, nothing stands out so many surfaces are overlooked.

You know what I think? I think Chrysler put an “exciting car” together, making very few changes to the actual design, and putting together a bunch of odds and ends to meet to make this car, and this concept. It shows me that Chrysler and Mopar have no more aspiration.

We all saw some amazing things come out of Plymouth (The Plymouth Prowler) and Oldsmobile (their general design, Aura, etc.), but I don’t think anybodies planning on resurecting Plymouth or Oldsmobile.

It is a one-off vehicle and should stay that way. I think Chrysler needs a halo car to create interest in the brand, but this car is not the appropriate product. If Chrysler is striving to be relevant again, then it needs to move upmarket. It needs a halo car that will represent that goal. This is not the car.

As far as the interior, I don’t think this car was created to preview the Challenger’s interior. It was a special order item for a customer by Metalcrafters. If Chrysler wanted to show a preview of the interior of the production Challenger, it would release a preproduction Challenger.

Piablo, mazdaman, 2008powerstroke…

Most people who are buying these will indeed care about the interior… and the horrible buildmanship, and the cheap materials, and the horrible layout.

If Chrysler plans on producing about 10,000 of these, why can’t they take the time to build a nice, top quality interior? It’s total disgrace and disgusting…

And that’s pretty much the production interior. The concepts interior was more square, but everything was flush with the dash and put together alright. I’m guessing because this interior is pretty close to the concepts, and virtually the same or similar to other cars produced by Chrysler, this is what the interior will very likely look like.

Oh yes… and if they’re looking for something authentic, and they don’t care about the interior but the performance and the retro looks, then they should be more than happy to go for a used or restored model.

Funny that the side sculpting and rear fender bulge of this looks more like the Charger than the Challenger does! I think they did a great job here, it really does do the ‘Cuda justice and may actually be more handsome than the Challenger — but there is no room in Chrysler’s stable for this.

I agree with you that interior design, build, layout, and quality are very important aspects of producing a great automobile. I think Chrysler is in the mess they are today because most of their cars have interiors composed of mainly cheap, “Rubbermaid” quality materials. Nowhere in my previous post did I say that vehicle interiors are unimportant.

I don’t think that this car previews the production Challenger’s interior. This car is a one-off vehicle produced by Metalcrafters as a special order item for a customer. It’s not even an official Chrysler show car. Why would Chrysler choose this vehicle to preview the interior of their upcoming revival of the hallowed, limited edition Challenger coupe. It would be an entirely foolish move on Chrysler’s part. I would think that Chrysler would wait to unveil the Challenger’s production interior until the car reaches the market to build up anticipation and interest.

I agree with hockeygod1331. There is all this jibberish, speculation, and overreaction over a car that basically signifies absolutely nothing. It does not preview the production Challenger’s interior: it does not preview an upcoming Chrysler brand product; and it definitely does not signal the return of the Plymouth brand.

I would much rather see an article about Chrysler LLC’s plans to fix their product problems (antiquated powertrains, weird designs, cheap interiors) and brand positioning (product overlap, inappropriate product development/placement) than any more news about this totally unnewsworthy vehicle. A one-off vehicle that signifies nothing for the company and that we will probably never hear about or see again is of absolutely no interest to me. Auction the bloody thing off and let’s move on to something more interesting. SHEESH!

It annoys me that a lot of you associate muscle cars with rednecks. Hey, they were super cars that the average joe could afford, better than some low production Ferrari’s at the time. I’m guessing because of your age you just don’t know the nostalgia that they had then.

very good points jJay…especially about LP being a whippersnapper about muscle cars. muscle cars were probably the best thing to ever happen to the automotive industry because they were affordable and could be fast unlike the hondas and mustangs of today. to get a decently fast mustang you’re paying more than $25,000…some of these muscle cars were twice as fast and half the price back in the day. granted you have to account for inflation but they were still a great value so the ‘rednecks’ could afford them. and i’m not saying that there are no fast hondas out today, but without dumping a ****-ton of money into them after purchase then they aren’t worth dick either. if only the auto companies would put the different options on them like they did in the 60’s and 70’s. there are relatively no options on today’s vehicles, they all come with different packages and there is nothing unique about any of them without, like i said before, dumping a ****-ton of money into them after purchase. the only real customizable cars today are some of the most expensive ones. if only it was the 60’s again…maybe the ‘rednecks’ could take over the world this time…
