I like the Demon concept and the Viper, but I think Chrysler LLC needs to repair its core, bread and butter business first. I know I kept the Challenger in the lineup, but it's already a production reality and it's also based on a platform used throughout the company. I think once they fix their mainstream business, then they can once again focus on more exciting low volume products like the Demon and Razor concepts or the Viper.

BTW, they should build that Dodge Razor. The coolest concept I ever saw Chrysler develop. 250 hp, $20k, RWD, two-seater road rocket with a hardtop and no radio. The basics done right.

No I wasn't kicked off - new computer and couldn't remember the password/email/username combination (I had it set to "Remember Me" so I never typed it in). But thanks for noticing.

BTW, Vista Ultimate is pretty stable - better than XP

I like inlilne's list. It's actually realistic and makes financial sense. But where's the Dodge Demon in all of this? Would build some great brand interest like the Sky has for Saturn.

I could see eliminating the Dakota. Its just too large. Its almost the same size as the Ram 1500. Just replace it with a Jeep Wrangler-based pickup and give Jeep its own pickup as well. I am not concerned about overlap since Jeep and Dodge are distinguished by styling and powertrains. I liked the Dodge M80 concept from years back. Also, the 1999 Dodge Power Wagon concept should be the look of the 2008 Ram-not the safe design we see.

Chrysler needs a more competitive Sebring model- either a version of the Mitsubishi Galant or better yet, re-style it to look lke a small Chrysler 300. It would look cool and different than the soap bar designs from other makers.

They should keep the Aspen and Durango in production but both need to go on diets since they gained so much size and weight with the last redesign. Both marques need a step up SUV from the smaller Nitro/Liberty models. The Jeep Commander, however, is more of a larger version of the ideal-sized Grand Cherokee. I would definitely cancel it in favor of the Cherokee.
Maybe they could combine all three into one platform.

The Jeep Compass is sure cute but its the same as the Patriot but with slightly newer styling. Perhaps the Patriot and Compass can combine into one platform with the Patriot name.

The Pacifica and PT Cruiser both need to be replaced by one good cross-over design based on the Dodge Journey. I think it could be different enough not to cannibalize Dodge sales.

Chrysler designers can re-capture the styling and design leadership again if their designers start taking risks again.

Sebring needs to go (but obviously needs to be replaced because its an important market)
Commander, we already knew that was going
CompASS - need I say more?
Durango - isn't that where half of Chrysler's sales are though?
Dakota - redesign it and make it smaller. It's about the size of a last-gen Tundra right now
Aspen - I actually don't mind it but the relationship between the Durango-Aspen should be like the one between the Armada-QX56

Oops! I noticed that I have the Nitro and Durango on the cancelled list and in the lineup. I initially decided to kill them until I reconfigured the dealership pairings. If Dodge would end up as a stand alone dealership in some areas, it might not hurt for the brand to continue to offer traditional SUV products. Chrysler wouldn't need them since they would always be paired with Jeep.

I guess I did go a little crazy, but it is fun to speculate.

I almost agree with the list, except the Dakota. I'd be sad to see it go, as it's really the only worthy mid-size truck to consider compared to the Ranger (almost dead) or Colorado/Canyon (crappy engine). And leave the damn Aspen alone, Chrysler needs a big BOF upscale SUV to compete with the Escalade/Navigator etc. If they want to eliminate the Durango, go ahead, but the Aspen stays firmly put.

Ford may be in a worse financial situation, but i think Chrysler is in worse shape. They should have never gotten rid of the neon, just restyle it. the caliber is soooo ugly even the srt-4 is hard to look at. they should have never added on to the jeep family like they did. none of those new models are selling (commander, compass, ect). they have soo much overlap, and everyting is destined way to aggressively for most people to like (avenger, caliber, nitro, ect) There interiors make you cringe with all that cheap plastic.

Dealer Configurations:

* Chrysler/Jeep: Combine Chrysler's near luxury products with Jeep's upscale rugged off-road capable vehicles (urban areas).
* Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep: Combine all three brands in rural, less populated areas.

You guys have too much time on your hands haha. Eh I say dump the Avenger, Compass, 4door Sebring. Remember they added the 300, magnum, charger in only a few years and the challenger is coming out. Time to clean house of the crap Daimler did to Chrysler.

Well, if they're canning the Durango and Dakota, they might as well can the Aspen as well. No use having one poor-selling vehicle on the market with a platform it isn't sharing with anything else.

jackjimturkey theres no reason to can the Aspen... its a tarted up durango and costs Chrysler little extra to produce. It just gives them a better looking durango thats a little tarted up. Its a much cheaper alternative to the escalade, and a much cheaper AND better alternative to the navigator.

commander and compass: both mistakes
the liberty it a bitchmobile compared to the badass Cherokee it replaced. Youll find very few male buyers of the liberty compared to the Cherokee, but i guess the Wrangler will do. Sebring: crap. Pacifica: crap.

Chrysler aspen should go, as should all the small jeeps.
Dump the commander.
1115: the sebring is terrible. Chrysler needs a new commuter coffin. Convertible should stay, but needs immediate improvement.

jackdev: I hate toyotas, (The Camry IS hideous)but they have no problem selling them. It seems like chrysler has a large roster of sales losers. Those should de dumped.

inline6: My thoughts

Chrysler:
300 Works, but please, no wagonn.
Crossfire - ditto you.
PT Cruiser - was poorly exceutted from the start, and now needs to go away.
Pacifica - Fine car, but it should be refreshed.
Town & Country - ditto you.
Dodge:
Caliber dump it, and add a new coupe/sedan.
Avenger - Remake it as a Thunderbird-type car. Challenger - ditto you.
Charger - fine.
Magnum -- add a 3rd row.
add the Journey

Viper - fine.
Nitro - dump it.
Grand Caravan - redisign it this week. It's ugly.
Sprinter - ditto you
Durango - update it.
Dakota - Update it, and add an heir to the d-50
Ram - Update it, but keep the lumpy hood.
Jeep:
Compass - dump it.
Patriot - dump it
Wrangler - freshen it up.
Liberty - replace it with a ner Cherokee
Grand Cherokee - add a 7- or 8-seat version.
Commander - dump
add a pickup.

and the durango is sweet and so is the dakota. The only reason the dakota might not sell is cause its not competitive in its segment. If it didnt have a V8 option it would be on par with the Ranger as far as sucking.

autonut: I never meant to imply I think the Liberty is good while the Nitro is bad. I think they both suck. A lot. But in terms of feasibly cutting a vehicle, I see Chrysler cutting the Nitro more likely, as it's a pointless vehicle in a made up segment, and it doesn't sell well and have any impact on the future of Dodge. The Liberty, however, has a solid buyers base from the last gen that sold really well, and is an integral part of the Jeep lineup. I think both vehicles are horrid, however, and would love them both to be cut. But in my last post I was just speaking of what I could see hypothetically happening, which would be the Nitro being cut and the Liberty being left alone.

In truth, to rationalize the line, they need to cut/change/update the following vehicles:

Chrysler:
Sebring sedan - Cancel, or replace with an upscale SWB version of the LX platform.
Sebring convertible - Cancel.
300 - Redesign soon. Add the wagon model, but with a 3rd seat. Can the 2.7L engine. Throw in an upscale coupe and convertible, too.
Crossfire - It's over. Can it.
PT Cruiser - Based on Caliber platform, but better. AWD should be optional. And bring it a bit more upscale. The only reason this shouldn't be a Dodge is because the Caliber is sort of similar, and the Chrysler brand needs something fuel-efficient.
Pacifica - Replace with a crossover version of the LX.
Town & Country - Drop the cheap versions.
Aspen - Cancel. Replace with a crossover version of the LX.

Dodge:
Caliber - Add a sedan model, redo the interior, upgrade the powertrains.
Avenger - Facelift it with less awkward styling. Add a convertible to replace the canceled Sebring.
Challenger - Bring it on.
Charger - Update soon. Integrate the Magnum name and styling to match the Charger. Give the Magnum a 3rd seat option, and keep the sedan/wagon under the price of the 300.
Viper - It may be time to let this one go. It doesn't sell. Company funds aren't forthcoming to keep it competitive. And it doesn't excite people like the older version did.
Nitro - Cancel. Let Jeep have the SUVs and Dodge have the crossovers.
Journey - Bring it on. Make sure it's excellent.
Grand Caravan - Just keep it competitive.
Sprinter - How much can it cost to import this and slap a Dodge grille on it? Keep it.
Durango - Cancel.
Dakota - Cancel. Let Jeep expand its line with a compact pickup.
Ram - Redesign soon.

Jeep:
Compass - Say goodbye.
Patriot - Needs a new interior and better powertrains. Oh, and actual off-road capability
Wrangler - Keep it competitive.
Liberty - Keep it competitive.
Grand Cherokee - Reduce the number of different platforms by turning this into a 3-row SUV on an extended Liberty platform.
Commander - The 3-row GC would render this unnecessary. Can it.
Wagoneer - Ram-based large SUV to compete with Tahoe/Yukon/Expedition.
Gladiator - Liberty or Wrangler-based compact/midsize pickup to replace the Dakota.

This would reduce the number of platforms, and still keep Chrysler in the same number of significant market segments:

Compact fwd car:
Caliber sedan/hatch, PT Cruiser, Patriot, Avenger, Journey
Midsize/large car:
Sebring replacement, 300, Pacifica/Aspen replacement, Challenger, Charger/Magnum
Minivan:
Grand Caravan/Town & Country
Small truck:
Wrangler, Liberty, Grand Cherokee, Gladiator
Large truck:
Ram, Wagoneer

FYI, the OLD Chrysler Sebring is the one that's being built in Russia. The new sedan could certainly see the door, and I wouldn't miss it, at all. The Avenger, though inelegant, is much better-looking. And if they offered a convertible version of that car, they'd do service to the Chrysler nameplate by being able to bring it upmarket again, instead of having a portfolio full of vehicles that just get flogged off to rental fleets en masse.

The Nitro is selling, and the Liberty is the best-selling Jeep model. So there's no real need from a sales perspective to can either of them. Though logistically, the Journey could replace the Nitro AND Durango.

But these are my thoughts.

The comments from the people that are saying dump this and dump that just because you hate Chrylser products are pointless and have not credibility. I find most Toyota products repulsive but it is ridiculous for me to say they should drop them. As for Chrysler dropping models, industry analysis suggests the Pacifica, techically a crossover, which is the hottest segment right now. Wouldnt it make more sence to REDESIGN it and keep the name at the end of its current cycle. Why is is ok for all other companies to have full size SUVs (some more then one) but Chrysler should drop the Durango? Makes no sense. Why is it ok for other companies to have different sized trucks but Chrysler should drop the Dakota? Makes no sense. Drop the Sebring!?! Just because critics dont like it is no reason to have no entry in the midsize segment. Makes no sense. Commander maybe and Compass I can see, to similar to the more Jeep appropriate Patriot. This entire list is so ridiculous and so are most of the comments im reading here. Here I will add one...

Toyota should drop the Camry because its ugly and it makes me puke!!

Get rid of the Sebring, Durango, Compass, Aspen, Nitro, Commander, Pacifica, and Dakota. Please. Then I'd be able to sleep easy knowing these weren't on the market anymore. In advance, I know the Liberty is on the same platform as the Nitro, but I couldn't see them cutting the Liberty for a number of reasons. The Nitro however is pure shit.

I could name 10 that I would eliminate lol. But this is a good thing. Once they are lean and mean they can focus on putting out quality products.

I agree with the Compass, Commander and Pacifica. If they'd restyled the Dakota so it was a better competitor against the Tacoma, it might stand a better chance.
Can't see them eliminating the Sebring convertible as it really has no direct competition aside from the Solara. The sedan can certainly go.

Ax the Durango. It had its day.
