Chrysler could turn to Chinese for Hornet partner

07/31/2006, 11:04 AM

By admin

For nearly a year, Chrysler has been rumored to be seeking a partner to build a $10,000 compact Dodge for the U.S. and other markets. In February, the automaker unveiled the Dodge Hornet Concept — believed to be the basis for the new b-segment vehicle. Chrysler’s most serious talks have been with Volkswagen, which could offer the Jetta or Polo architecture for the car. However, Germany’s Automobilwoche is now reporting that Chrysler is looking to other potential partners to make the low-cost car a reality. A new frontrunner could be China’s Chery Automobile, which specializes in compact cars. While no final decision has been made, it’s clear Chrysler is serious about making the Hornet as inexpensive as possible.

making a new platform costs a crap load of money.
Chrysler probably doesn’t have a cheap compact platform. Mercedes’ A-class and B-class are expensive cars.

So Dr. Z, what was the purpose of joining Mecedes and Chrysler? So that you could turn to the Chinese Auto Industry (built completely on the blatant and criminal theft of other manufacturers work) to make you a buck? Sorry pal, but I would never buy a Chinese car. Never.

It shouldn’t wear the name “Hornet” EVER. esp. if it’s Chinese.

I dont remember but was Hornet a Plymouth? Yes, bad to have same name for a small car like this under Plymouth name. Since there are no Plymouth, i guess its alright to use Hornet for this small car. Its no biggie. Not like they did with Charger as 4 door. Thats bad!

I’m still all for the joint venture with VW on this car, why have a Chinese partner when VW has factories in Mexico, could just build them there, too, and it’s a better chioce, too.

I remember chrysler saying hornet has a “rallye-inspired look”.

It is so funny to see Americans perceiving everything in such a dumb way. “Football” is played with a pigskin ball where the only footwork involved is a field goal and everyone wears exoskeleton suits while football is a “sissy sport” frowned upon as “soccer”. Then you wake up and call a car that looks like a bus “rallye-inspired”. Idiots!
