Chrysler de-creases Sebring hood for 2010

09/02/2009, 10:20 AM

By Andrew Ganz

With few exceptions, model year changes at Chrysler have been mild, to say the least – but one stylistic modification nearly slipped past us. Chrysler’s Sebring sedan and convertible will lose their controversial creased hood design for 2010 and replace it with a more conventional flat metal style.

Though the Sebring is among the slowest sellers in its class, Chrysler didn’t see fit to make many more changes for the new model year aside from some minor revisions to the gauges and some shuffling of options.

The original hood design had been shared, at least in concept, with the also slow-selling Crossfire, so it comes as little surprise that Chrysler would smooth things out a bit.

Johnny, don’t do it! Drop the needle! Chrysler is harmless, fledgling, little American car company. Remeber Lee Iococca! Everyone loved Lee Iococca! Drop the needle for Lee!

But, on a serious note, glad they got rid of the creases. Was ugly to begin with.

I liked the creases. Reminded me a bit of the Crossfire, one of the few decent cars Chrysler made in the recent past.

Otherwise both Sebring and Avenger are a total loss.

Yeah, at least the creases reminded you of a well made car, only to be disappointed in the Sebring you really got. I guess now you just have to be dissapointed from the start.

I’m still buying a Crossfire at some point in the near future, you can get a freakin’ awesome looking car that’s not a bad performer for the low 10’s – possibly with warrenty left.

And LLN, instead of slandering their use with the crossfire, you could argue they’re also present on the [once] very hot selling Pacifica.

And The Winner Is…

The side profile and rear of the Sebring are not that bad, but that front end is very poorly styled. The headlamp/parking light bezel is way too big, making the car look kind of bug-eyed. If the front were styled like the 200C concept, it would make the Sebring much more palatable overall.

No matter what – it’s always looked 10x better than the Avenger. At least it doesn’t try to look sporty and come up short, it’s just trying to look luxurious and coming short. I’d rather have that. The Avenger is just a horrible looking Charger wannabe with bad angles everywhere.

It was a good design element. But not on this car. As a whole, the SEBRING looks like some doughy bastard child next to the tough and chiseled 300. I would like to see, if not the 200C or NASSAU, which look really damn good, then really lean the SEBRING in that direction. But redoing the hood is not enough.

For all it’s flaws, the SEBIRNG’s styling is a complete package. Fixing only one part of it only makes the whole thing worse. Oh the joys of a fully integrated body design. The Completeness of it all looks good by itself, even if you don’t like it. But the down side is that you can’t fix anything without wrecking everything.

I don’t see how Chrysler could “see fit” to do more than cosmetic changes for the Sebring for 2010. The tone of this article is less journalism and more disdain. When you’ve stopped all spending to go into bankruptcy and need to minimize tooling costs for a while, a major redo during the middle of the product cycle isn’t going to really help your bottom line.

Genesis101,

FIAT just took over CHRYSLER a couple of months ago. The biggest problem I have with this is the FIAT is just expanding and not doing much with what it just picked up. There is really no one in charge there or won’t be soon. There is a lot of rearranging going on over there and so not a lot of real work is being done.

I’m not happy with a lot of decision that are being made there right now. The Caliber SRT-4 is being dropped, not fixed (Shame it has incredible potential), the CHALLENGER needs major updates not more than 2 years out the shoot, this lame attempt to freshen up the SEBRING, and mindless delays over the next 300, no word about the 200C, Hornet, and several others.

CHRYSLER has the makings of a major, utterly miraculous, comeback but it needs to make it happen in the next few months. After that, when everyone else has recovered from 2008’s drop-off-a-cliff, if CHRYSLER is not firing on all cylinders by then, as it were, it will be too late.

I hope you all didnt think Fiat was gonna come in and fix chrysler in a single day. it takes time to make changes, right now little refreshes are the simple thing to do until the chrysler line can be totally retrhough and pushed forward.

But on this car.. THANK GOD!!!! i hated those creases! the only car it looked good on was the cross fir then crhysler put it on every single one of their vehicles which was sad. But still like someone else said “lipstick on a pig” bout sums up this little refresh.

Genesis, every vehicle you mention was conceived long before the BK and in fact their releases were delayed by it. Fiat’s biggest hurdle will be keeping the current Chrysler lineup viable until they have decided a direction. Don’t get me wrong, there are also new Chrysler products the initial design phase of which probably goes back to the Daimler era (and that scares me) but they will be released shortly (300, Charger, Grand Cherokee).

As for a lineup that is truly representative of the vision Fiat has for Chrysler, well that’s going to take a full design cycle. In other words about 3-4 years.

…perhaps I should have said ‘new from the wheels up’ Chryslers. There will, of course, be many rebadged Fiats in the interim as well as anything that was thought up during the Cerberus fiasco which Fiat has chosen to see to fruition.

My gawd, when you really think about it they are lucky to be alive at all.

you’re right about that but think of this, can we really hold on to vehicles like the calibur (by the way it looks) for another 3-4 years? its already outdated enough, chrysler should of been thinking of the next models when they had first came out like the 300.. they had countless rear end facelift that didnt make any sense but never changed it, its going on 2010 and the 300 came out in 2005, and the next 300 is a what.. 2010/2011???? come on chrysler……

chrylser should be spittin those cars out like hyundai is, if chryslers cars had good quality i think they would of took the ford route.

Funny that you mention Hyundai, because that’s what Chrysler is going to have to do to survive in the short term. Mention Hyundai 5-10 years ago and you thought of price first, quality later. I’m not implying all Chrysler products are complete piles of rubbish but they better have a price advantage otherwise most of them will have no advantage at all.

Jonny you nailed my rebuttle before i could get back to my computer to type it. And also to add to Chrysler’s ailments over GM, GM simple went through bankruptcy, Chrysler Went through Bankruptcy AND Went through ownership change, everything is a mess over there. on top of that, GM was clearly in better standing than chrysler before all this went down anyway. GM had ideas but way too much “fat” so to speak to keep everything fresh and in line. chrysler has been in the midst of misdirection and not having a clue for a long time. But like Jonny said in a couple years when the next model cycle comes about You will start to see the fruits of chrysler brainstorming labor.

It’s going to take more than “ironing out” the hood to remove the wrinkles from this ill-conceived car. Maybe this relatively minor modification is an indication that Chrysler will replace it soon (hopefully).

If the sedan is going to be around for a little while longer, it’s going to need more extensive revisions. This is what I would do:
1) Take the ridiculous black plastic fakeout off the C-pillar. The black plastic inside the door cutline by the C-pillar would then become body-colored. I would add a chrome surround around the side windows.
2) After the fakeout issue has been addressed, I would give the rest of the sedan a 300C-esque exterior makeover. The front and rear would get more upright, boxier 300C influenced redesigns. I would also give the sedab more pronounced wheel arches (like the 300C) and more stylish sideview mirrors (also like the 300C). The door handles and sideview mirrors would be covered in chrome. Basically, the exterior restyling would allow the sedan to look like a 7/8 scale 300C (which I’m convinced was the original plan before someone decided to take the Airflite route with this car). The resulting sedan would have a more formal appearance than the ungainly mess of the current design.
3) The interior would need some major revisions also. Nicer materials, sound deadening, and better fit and finish.
4) 6-speed automatic transmissions would be standard with all engines, not just the top trim V6. Suspension tuning would need to be tweaked also.

I’m not sure how to fix the convertible version. I’m not so sure the 300C treatment would work for the convertible. I would give the convertible a front end restyling that would make it look similar to the 200C Concept. I would also restyle the awkward taillight elements. Maybe that would be enough to fix the exterior appearance of the convertible. Of course, the interior, transmission, and suspension upgrades from the sedan would carry over to the convertible.

Of course, I wouldn’t waste the amount of effort that I described above on this car if Fiat/Chrysler intends to replace it soon (the 2011 model year should be its last, I hope). I would only implement the suggestions I submitted above if a replacement product was not a feasible possibility in the near future (within the next couple of years, if not sooner). I think replacement would be the preferable strategy.

I do agree with some of the other posts about being too quick to criticize the new Fiat/Chrysler arrangement. Fiat just inherited the mess that was the old Chrysler this year. It’s too early to expect wide sweeping changes at this point. Give it some time and let’s hope for the best. Daimler pretty much sucked the life out of this company and Cerberus didn’t have a clue (or the talent or resources for that matter) on how to right the ship. Hopefully, a synergy with Fiat can produce some great results for this troubled company and allow it to get back on track. It will take Fiat some time to sort out the mess and create some effective product strategies.

Oops! I don’t know what a “sedab” is (an error I made in the third sentence of point 2 in my prior post), but it’s going to have more pronounced wheel arches and more stylish sideview mirrors. Apparently I over-reached when I was trying to hit the “N” key. My bad!

That car is so ugly in both versions that it doesn’t matter what they did to the hood. Chrysler just drop this one. Even if they badge engineered the Avenger with a Chrysler grill it would be an improvement until they can come up with something better.

Stop gap until they can afford to fully redesign. Still not enough to make the Sebring popular enough to sell well.
