Chrysler idles Mexican truck plant for second time this summer

07/07/2008, 6:30 PM

By Drew Johnson

If you needed more proof that the pickup truck market is drying up in the U.S., look no further than a new report from Mexico. Chrysler has announced that it will idle its Ram plant in Saltillo, Mexico, marking the second time the truck plant has been idled this summer.

Chrysler decided to suspend production at its Saltillo plant due to weak demand in the U.S.

In June, Chrysler idled the plant due to sagging demand from June 9-23. Chrysler had hoped its $2.99 gas incentive program would spur pickup demand, but Ram sales continue to lag behind expectations. In June, Chrysler sold 16,149 Rams, down nearly 50 percent from a year earlier, according to Automotive News.

The plant – which employs 2,000 workers – will be idled from now until August 1st.

That $2.99 gas incentive is a dumb incentive.

Maybe instead of the gas incentive they could offer a Mexican vacation at a certain 5 pentastar resort.

Just shut down the factory or gear up for something else, because trucks aren’t going to make a comeback.

Wait…

Second time this summer? Summer just barely started, and they’ve already idled the plant twice? What did they do, start it up again for a day, and then idle it again? How many trucks can you build in one day? Or even a week for that matter?

Nice to see that the mass exodus from SUVs and trucks is affecting our good friends to the south. Maybe they’ll cross the border and go work illegally for Toyota now.

Like we didnt see this comming? Chryslers trucks are far behind in what a modern day truck is supposed to be. Guess the Hemi engine isnt good on gas is it dodge? Why the hemi anyway? They could of made a fully capable truck using the V8, instead they went with a Hemi. Looking for speed, get a sports car. Its funny how Ford continues to kick there ass in truck sales.
