No, you've got it all wrong! During earthquakes all lead falls all the way down to China then it gets re-manufactured into lead paint, used to paint toys and all the toys are shipped back to us!

Sabon - You are quite witty. Are you proud of yourself? I have already checked, no oil on my property. Your mom's hair is pretty greasy. Maybe we could refine that....

You are right, I choose not to give a crap about the Prius, however I would assume that the recycler would be the answer, and guess what, it was. Sorry I am a "nut job" because i don't give the Prius a reach around.

As far as toxic waste, sure send me a couple of tons of lead. I can cast it into free bullets and I rent anyway so i can leave it when I move.

I vote that we send all toxic materials to brassmonkey's house since he thinks they are no problem.
I also vote to start drilling for oil and everything else under the ground in brassmonkey yard since he thinks that drilling is ok to drill anywhere we want to. I figure his place is as good as anywhere.

As for the nut job that doesn't know that Prius batteries are recycled, I'm sure he won't mind some of the toxic waste being stored on his property and leaching into his water.

As for Random Jerk - these people do not want to be edumacated because they is smarter that all everyone else put tooget.

Note: All incorrect spelling on previous paragraph was done on purpose.

Where do Prius batteries go when they die? The same place your lead acid battery goes, to the recycler.

Once again, I invite you to educate yourself:

http://www.toyota.com/html/hybridsynergyview/2006/fall/battery.html

"Q: Are hybrid batteries recyclable?

A: Absolutely. In fact, Toyota pays a bounty to dealers who recover them from damaged vehicles. Additionally, our engineers are studying the possibility of remanufacturing these batteries."

Everything we do encroaches on the health of the environment so why would this be any different? We would need to go back to the stone ages to avoid it! That theory begs the question...how much are you willing to give up to keep the world clean? Not that we should not try to find ways to do so. It's just a matter of viability. Again, *everything* we do and use typically has a negative effect on the environment.

Thank god for Cali! The environmental watchdog of the country!!! :sarc:

^^ well said. If I have to charge a customer an extra 1$ on a set of tires to keep more lead out of the landfills i'm sure they would pay it. If you ever took a step into a shop next to the tire machine their is usually a 5gal pail filled with these things. If it were 5gal pails of lead based paint would you want it being dumped into your landfills and bodies of water.

Here is the link to the LA Times article if you want to actually be educated and not be just another LeftLane reactionary moron.

http://www.latimes.com/news/science/environment/la-fi-wheels21-2008aug21,0,1537370.story

"Lost wheel weights are ground down by passing vehicles and the lead can find its way into drinking water supplies, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. They also end up in landfills, where the lead can leach into groundwater."

"As lead weights are phased out, weights made of steel or zinc alloy are being used for tire balancing. Those weights are larger and cost 20% to 30% more, said Mark Aiken, vice president of sales for Plombco. However, because wheel weights typically cost less than 50 cents each and there are generally only two per wheel, the higher cost shouldn't have a big effect on consumers, he said."

Judging by all the people who think it should be ok to continue to spread TOXIC metals across the country I think the lead poisoning retardation has already set it.

Wow, California has seemed to be on a lawsuit rampage as of lately. Lead weights are not of that much concern.

Even more interesting is that California and other West coast states have lightened the intensity of their gun control weenies, groups and programs. Why? Now their going for the ammunition. They've already made it illegal to carry some forms of bullets, lead in particular, claiming that they kill wildlife. I find it funny that despite their own funded studies, they couldn't find any more than a few (in the double digits) animals throughout the western states that had died of "lead poisoning" from bullets.

Um, Cracker, Toyota/Scion is currently the top selling brand in California (22% market share), followed by Honda (12%) and then Ford (11%).

Taken from http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/uptospeed/2008/07/california-car.html: "The top-selling models in the state were (in order) the Toyota Camry, the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla/Matrix, the Honda Accord and the Toyota Prius."

Brain damage you say? I think the brain damage concerns correlate to decisions far greater than just choice of automobile. Britney Spears comes to mind...

But this isn't just Chrysler. Many manufacturers of wheel weights use lead. I had lead weights in nearly every car I've ever owned, and I buy from just about any brand. The good news is that at least someone is taking a step in the right direction, albeit a minor step, but it's a step. I really don't think wheel weights are so big of a concern that we need to stop making them all together.

Hey, anyone remember the news from Michelin about the "Tweel"? Whatever happened to that thing? The closest thing I've seen to the Tweel is the wheel on my SkipDR CD/DVD repair system.

OK. Not all of California is sunny skies, plastic boobs, and pot smoking hippies. I live in CA (in a suburb of Sacramento), Republican, Christian, straight, don't smoke pot, and I own a gun. And I don't recycle, global warming is horseshit, and we need to drill for oil YESTERDAY! It may be a good idea to drop the lead, but only if we have a good alternative, and not as a response to a lawsuit from the eco-nazis. There are many of us in CA that hate Pelosi, Murtha, Reid, Biden, Obama, etc, etc.

I am not really bashing Chrysler, I just hate to see lead wheel weights disappear, it would make a cheap plentiful source of lead go away.

When I saw this article in the news yesterday, I was wondering how many ignorant low-lifes would come forward on LLN to bash Chrysler's move.

I just thought of something: Lead poisoning causes brain damage, which in turn causes people to buy more chrylser/gm/ford products! It finally makes sense now.

Maybe Arnold has some of that 'living' metal left over from the Terminator movies, although if that really existed Chrysler no doubt would have already used it to reshape pretty much all of their vehicles.

Well, I highly doubt wheel weights are seriously cause for concern in this state anyway. We have MUCH larger problems than that.

But I, too, would like to know what the replacement material is 'cuz my wheels notoriously throw wheel weights here in Cali so if it gets anyworse, I'll need to move solid billet wheels. har har

Wow... how are you domestic (Mexican/Canadian) humpers going to twist this now. You don't see superior import brands using lead.

Maybe all the wobbling, vibrating, and otherwise ill-working wheels will shake loose the San Andreas for a whopper, and rid us of these stupid weenies. Really? Lead weights that much of a problem? and only in CA? Hmm, CA, why don't you fix all the potholes and expansion joints (at least in LA) which cause the weights to fall off in the first place? Ever think of THAT?

It's a good idea and should probably be incorporated in all 50 states. My question is what is the alternative metal they are going to use?
