Chrysler today announced pricing on its 2008 Dodge Avenger sedan. The entry-level SE model is priced from $18,220, featuring a 173-hp four-cylinder engine. Next up is the better-equipped SXT model, which costs $19,120. SXT buyers can upgrade to a 189 horsepower E85-ready V6.
The range-topping Avenger R/T comes with a 235 horsepower V6 for $22,870. The all-wheel-drive version costs $24,870. Both R/T models come equipped with a six-speed automatic. As reported in October, deliveries are expected to begin in February.

Chrysler’s design studio used the “really big ugly stick” on the Avenger, and then priced it accordingly.

i think i figured out DCX marketing strategy…they made the Sebring really ugly…so when they park it next to the Avenger, the Dodge looks better and will sell more. then they can just sell the Sebring to rental companies. Im not saying the Avenger is a stunner but next to the Sebring it looks amazing.

You know, I think there is such a thing as taking brand unity too far and Dodge is proving it. Somebody needs to give DCX a wake up call and let them know that their vehicles don’t all need to look like trucks from the front end to make them look tough.

Slider—I totally agree with you. I just got back from the NAIAS in Detroit, and in person, this car is seriously homely. It’s one of those cars that looks better in pictures than it does in person.
I don’t see great sales figures for this car in the future. But for Chrysler’s sake, I hope I’m wrong.

This car truly is a piece of ****, I don’t care if people say I’m just a critic about everything, but anybody with 2 eyes can see this plasticky looking piece of **** looks god awful. Both this and the new Sebring are styling failures, in different ways, the Sebring is a mix of too many odd shapes and designs, while this is trying far too hard to look truckish and tough and just looks cheap

I have to agree w/ most of you in that this car looks bad. Indeed i think they are taking the truck image to far down the line into their cars. Of course there will be those who love it. Take the Pontiac Ass Tack (aztec). What a horrible looking flop that was and they still found people touched enough in the head to buy them. Spinning it in a positive light its nice manufactures make ugly pieces of ****. It makes the cars we drive that much better.

This car looks fine. Not great, Not good just fine. Meant to be the baby Charger? Check
Meant to carryover dodge brand image? Check
Meant to pull the ‘In your face’ attitude out of a person? Check
I think the car is unobtrusive and I have not seen it in person but I think it will be just what DCX wants it to be. A smaller Charger. And all that that entails

XeroBlue: If you build it, they will come. Sad, but true. I know at least two people who bought Aztek’s, and I find it mind boggling. Then again, the Rendezvous is pretty popular, too, and it’s the same damned thing.

I missed the line describing the All Wheel Drive V6 6MT version. I’d hate to automatically write off what appears to be a good sporty car simply because it’s wrong wheel drive.

Anyways, I’m sure Dodge will find buyers for this. The Caliber was “ugly” too, but it’s selling quite well. The AWD and powerful V6 will help alot.

lol a wrx sti is an overpriced ****box subcompact with a hoss driveline. Unless you arer an autocrosser or a fast and furious nutswinger it is a waste of money especially since the 2.5 found its way into the standard impreza WRX. Keep in mind I just sold my subaru and loved it.
lol..
either way this car is certainly better than the one that it replaces and should do fairly well.

Considering the Caliber SRT4 will be good for 300hp and the Magnum and Charger SRT8s have 425hp, what engine can DC drop into this to make it an SRT6, and what power figures can we expect? The Crossfire SRT6 motor won’t do since that is a Mercedes-based RWD vehicle. Any thoughts?

hyperion. my comment about ****box is that it is based off the austere impreza, basically a ****box small car. It can’t run from that. what starts out as an 18k car, turns into a 34k car and like I said unless you’re boy racer or a legit racer it is a joke for the price. The car is basically 50k canadian here.. I can damn near get a BMW 335 for that. lol. Don’t get me wrong, it is a hell of a race car if that is what you need, but for that price I think it is a joke.
autonutt, this would do just fine with the caliber srt4 motor. It would haul ass. Before my subbie I had a neon srt4 (sx2.0 in canada) which my brother now owns and that thing flew with even its stock 234 fwhp / 260fwtq. As it sits it has something like 265 wheel hp and 320 wheel tq.

People bought the Aztek for the same reason people buy Elements and HHRs and Calibers…they may not be the best looking, but they’re functional, the price is right, and they’re different.
The Avenger is all of these.
But unfortunately for it I don’t it can carve out a niche like those vehicles did. This has to go head to head with the Fusion and the Camry and the Accord and the Altima…even DCX’s own Sebring. And I don’t think it can do that.

But then again, I am one of those people that acknowledge that American cars are not “****” or “crap” or any other type of excrement slang and are just as good, and in some cases better, then the Japanese. I havent been brainwashed. Good job Dodge and Chrysler.

I remember when the Charger was a coupe with some serious go-fast flair (’66 – ‘71). Dodge had me scratching my head when they resurrected the car with four doors. I’ve warmed up to the looks…somewhat. It is the basis of one bad-assed cop car! But now they shrunk the styling to fit a smaller FWD chassis. Like the Caliber, this Avenger looks like it was assembled using LEGO blocks. This car needs softer lines. Although the hardware is promising, a six-speed MANUAL option would be even nicer.
