Chrysler has seen fit to invest big in its Toledo North Assembly Plant. The automaker has plans to spend $500 million to prepare the facility to build several new vehicles, including a Fiat-based Jeep Liberty replacement.

Documents presented to the city of Toledo reveal that Chrysler will update its paint shop, body-in-white, trim chassis final and material handling facilities at the plant, which will be expanded by about 300,000 square feet to accommodate a larger body shop and quality lab. A second shift will also be added at Toledo North, which currently builds the Liberty and Dodge Nitro and is at present the sole Chrysler plant with just one shift.

The plant's new product, the Liberty successor, will ride on a Fiat platform called "CUSW" that could serve as the basis for as many as eight upcoming compact and mid-sized vehicles in North America.

"This plant has been chosen to build the future Jeep SUV to replace the current Jeep Liberty that will be exported to markets all over the world," CEO Sergio Marchionne said at Toledo North this morning.

"Jeep is at the heart of our plans to internationalize Chrysler, a process which is being accelerated by Chrysler's access to Fiat's distribution capabilities in Europe and Latin America."

Chrysler intends to spend another $1.2 billion on other facilities in the U.S. and supplier tooling to prepare for the new Jeep model, which is expected to hit the market as a 2013 or 2014 model.
