Chrysler has announced the recall of its 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 and Chrysler 300 SRT8 models. The recall is due to a fault with the vehicles’ tire pressure monitoring system.

According the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the tire pressure monitoring system used in the 2012 versions of the Charger SRT8 and 300 SRT8 doesn’t comply with federal motor vehicle safety standard 138, which requires the TPMS to warn the driver when tire pressure dips 25 percent below the recommended level. In the Charger/300′s case that magic number is 24psi, but the NHTSA found that the system didn’t actually warn the driver until tire pressure hit 22psi.

Although a relatively minor recall in the grand scheme of things, the NHTSA cautions that under-inflated tires can lead to tire overloading and overheating. Tires under that kind of added pressure could burst, increasing the likelihood of a crash.

Chrysler will remedy the problem by reprogramming the vehicles’ TPMS. The recall is expected to officially begin next month. Just 303 units are included in the recall.
