kinda out there but a couple of buddies and i went on a road trip this past summer and saw this particular car burning on the freeway. the driver and her friend were standing outside crying while the car continued to burn...halting every other vehicle to a stop. my friends and i was privliedged to have front row seats. fortunetly, the fire crew got to it before it exploded into millions of pieces. thankyou firemen...and the lone firewoman.

Jumpoffit, I had the same thing happen to my PT Cruiser when I had only driven it for a week. Here's what happened, and it could be the same thing for your brother-in-law:

The transmission linkage cable runs along just above the transmission. It's mounted up there, but not very well. Sometimes, the linkage mount comes open and the linkage cable touches the transmission. Since the transmission is hot, the plastic coating melts. When the car sits and cools off, the plastic from the cable causes the linkage to not move, meaning you can't get the car out of the gear that it was left in no matter what you do. I pulled really hard on mine and broke the linkage cable while it was in drive, which meant that when I turned it off, I couldn't get the key out and I couldn't restart it. Someone had to come get it. But the tow truck guy and I fixed it right there.

It's a cheap and easy problem to fix.

It's too bad that Chrysler just didn't get it right with the Sebring. I could have seen a lot more potential coming from this car, and the Avenger as well.

If you would have asked me in 2002 what US automaker was headed in the right direction I would have said Chrysler. Cab forward, MB engineering, the 300, the Ram and the Hemi all were great. WTF happened to the company and its design leadership.

Andrew, I actually think the market place has shown that the Sebring is completely irrelevant. It may sell more than the GT-R, but that doesn't make it more relevant. The car is a flop, a terrible performer, and disgusting inside and out...and I'm a Chrysler fan.

johnnycanuck, yep, I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that Mark had more fun in the GT-R than I did in the Sebring! Still, as you well know, the Sebring is way more relevant to the marketplace as a whole than the GT-R and that's why we spent a week in it, too. Breadth and depth, I suppose!

Andrew: this must have been a real treat for you knowing Mark Elias was testing the GT-R!

OK, laugh all you want, but I have an '06 Touring. It's metallic black with the 15 spoke rims and shined up (this will be my last car with a black paint job) it looks quite sleek- as did most Chryslers from the cab-forward era. The seats are also quite comfortable and it actually enjoys a twisting section of mountain highway. My version of the 2.7 is 200 horse and though it is not at its best off the line it pulls strongly to redline and when you keep your foot down it snaps off shifts at 6400 rpm.

So what the hell happened? This thing is atrocious. It's like they couldn't make up their mind on anything. The Avenger is a mini Charger so why didn't they make this a mini 300C? The engine loses 10 horse, (now down to 178 in the Charger?) and it handles like a donkey cart. I believe, unintentionally, they have succeeded in bringing back the K Car. About the only things missing are a vinyl roof and some cheap velour seats. The biggest difference is I don't think even Iacocca could move these.
