More than 140 Dodge Chargers, representing every generation of the iconic muscle car will parade through the DaimlerChrysler Auburn Hills, Michigan complex on June 10th as the Chrysler Employee Motorsport Association (CEMA) celebrates the Charger’s 40th anniversary as part of its annual charity car show. A key element of the CEMA show is its continuing commitment to raising funds to support the efforts of the Children’s Leukemia Fund of Michigan. While entrance to the show is free, funds will be raised through sales of a raffle to win a one of a kind rebuilt 1947 Dodge Power Wagon powered by a Buick Nailhead engine—an effort led by the morning team from Detroit radion station WCSX. The CEMA charity car show will go rain or shine on June 10th from 9 to 3 at DaimlerChrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills.

I have to work at 10, but I may head out early to see if I can see anything before that. If I can get pictures I’ll post a link on this site to get to them. That would be interesting. I’m sure there is someone on here who’s also from around the Auburn Hills area who may do the same.

It’s derigueur to rag on the “awful fwd daytona chargers in the 80’s” but you have to look at the entire automotive scene before you knock them. In the mid 80s (1985 and 1986) the muscle car scene was bleak. The best Trans Am or IROC would pump out a whopping 210hp (from the 305TPI motors) and these were only available with slushboxes. The 1985 Mustang GT’s output was about 200hp or so. The front wheel drive Omni/Charger in GLH trim (especially GLH-S) were putting out about 175hp but weighed considerably less. My best friend had a GLH Turbo back then and we would race the big V8s at every light and smoke each and every one of them. Were they reminiscent of the traditional Charger with a honking 440 under the hood? Nope but they weren’t slow either. Extra bonus points for the Omni’s boxy styling, we caught many a Mustang, Javelin and once even a new Corvette driven by my brother-in-law (up to 70mph, after that the Corvette easily pulled away).

GT — your comment is too logical and well thought out for a regular LLN commenter.

I personally feel sorry for anyone who had to live through the 80’s drought of cars. i mean, do you really give that car respect? it looks hideous, anyone with performance in mind, knows the most logical arrangement is rwd, and look at the platform it was built on, i would like to see how much that car twists on corners.. i bet alot. not even going to mention the quality of build..

and does anyone no agree the ass of the new charger belongs on a dodge stratus? talk about giving up after the front, props to the front end, its mean, but from the front quarter panels the car just get progressivly worse. i loved when they call that bump a “classic coke bottle design” what a joke.

i’ve grown up with chargers.
my dad had a 1966 midnight blue 318 charger. that car was fantastic – i can still remember rumbling around beneath that big back window with the seats folded down and that blue loop pile between all the chrome seat trim strips.
as an adult, i’ve owned multiple chargers, and currently own a 1970 charger 500 with a 440/727 370 horsepower setup.
happy 40th charger!
(i only wish they’d called that 4-door cop package a polara or coronet.)
