Chrysler has come to terms with the fact that the line has suffered from quality shortcomings, and says it is openly discussing and tackling problems in a new light. Chrysler has set ambitious goals to become a quality leader by 2012, and has already begun significant changes to help make the lofty goal a reality.
In an interview with The Detroit News highlighting changes in structure and culture, Doug Betts, senior vice president in charge of quality for Chrysler said, “It’s different now. People are talking openly about problems now and how to fix (them).”
Despite Chrysler’s aggressive goals for quality improvement, Chrysler is still drawing doubts on its overall survival from the likes of critics such as Senator John McCain.
Chrysler Group LLC is standing firm that it intends to be a true quality leader by the end of 2012 due to a significant structure change in terms of how Chrysler addresses and engineers quality. Chrysler also points towards more stringent internal standards, as well as making a significant effort to change long-entrenched company culture in regards to quality.
Betts pledged that Chrysler has company-wide support to achieve their crucial new goal, and that includes tangible changes in the structure and size of the department responsible for quality.
Chrysler’s new CEO, Sergio Marchionne of Fiat, has played a key role in Chrysler’s laser-focus on quality moving forward. Chrysler is in the process of hiring 200 additional engineers that will be dedicated to quality – bringing the quality team total to 1,700 personnel.
In addition to the increase in raw numbers of quality personnel, Chrysler is also breeding a change in culture that involves “cross-functional” teams that are involved in all departments. This change is aimed at increasing communication and addressing problems in all areas – not just having the quality team find and address potential quality issues.
Recent changes in quality commitments are believed to be responsible for reducing engineering-related defects from 75% to only only 50% responsible when compared to manufacturing causes. Improvements in quality are also being noticed by Fiat as they are now looking to borrow a page from Chrysler’s latest chapter in the quality story by integrating the “cross-functional” teams at Fiat.
In addition to the team Fiat is also considering the use of new software that Chrysler developed to track parts movement and identify problems within the plants.

None of this will matter unless Fiat ponies up cash to keep Chrysler afloat to next year, much less 2012. So far, Fiat has invested ZERO in Chrysler, yet thanks to our moronic government leaders, they own a controlling interest (basically for free). Chrysler is still burning cash badly.
If Fiat just walked away from Chrysler, they would have nothing to lose. And if things get much worse, that’s exactly what they will do.

It’s a nice goal. I would like to be a millionare by 2012, but the fact is it probably won’t happen, either. From what I understand FIAT’s current offerings aren’t exactly at Toyota’s level in Europe. We all know Chryslers eat transmissions(among other parts) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So if you combine the two companies the problem will be solved. Believe that when I see it.

Chrysler is getting money from somewhere. They are heavily hiring engineers and are developing new products. I ASSUME they are getting the cash from Fiat to pay the expenses.
As I have said before, Chrysler/Fiat can make it. They just better be ready to put in a lot of cash and see 2 years of pretty heavy losses. If Fiat can afford it then it can happen. Issue is I do not think Fiat has the cash.

Everything is possible after witnessing the redemption of the Hyundai and KIA brands, but doing this in two years is overly optimistic. I wish them good luck because if they fail this will be another nail in the coffin of American manufacturing.
P.S. I’m not American ( I live up north) but I’m really amazed by the level of schadenfreude displayed by commenters here, it’s like being joyful and happy for turning into a third world country.

I have owned nothing but Chrysler products since 1998 and never had problems with any of them. They have been great cars. I admit they made some mistakes during the Daimler years but they are trying to pull themselves up so lets hope they make it.

She is only interested in color when buying a vehicle and after getting a vehicle getting her from point A to point B which the Compass served us well until March of this year when the lease was up.

However, almost 30 years have passed since and 30 years ago Chevy Vega, Ford Pinto or Plymouth/Chrysler products weren’t much better. Heck, Chrysler was on government respirator, their cars were so great. A lot of things changed since: we are reading of Ford building quality cars, GM presumptively also, perhaps FIAT turned the corner? Base on what I’ve seen in Europe, they actually did, so if Chrysler with weather recession (and a lot of us doubt that) it is doable and possible. FIAT does have experience in performing turnaround.

Because Chrysler was NEVER a successful car company to begin with. Their only success was the introduction of the minivan thanks to Lee Iaccoca who originally had the idea for Ford. And even to this day, the Caravan and Town & Country are one of the worst in terms of quality. Slaughtered by the Sienna and Odyssey. And one more thing. Chrysler can’t do anything unless they have their hand held by someone else. Whether its Iacocca, Daimler Benz, or FIAT. The instant someone lets go of their hand, they wander off into trouble and almost disintigrate off the face of the market. I may rant alot about GM. But I admit. GM can do things on their own and have a shot at being quality leaders. But will never do it unless someone blows sunshine up their @$$.

I don’t mind it AT ALL if chrysler comes to quality and reliability standard close to honda/toyota/ford, what I don mind, though, is setting goals that are not that close to being attainable! A car company can’t just go from complete sh!t to being known as reliable in 4 years! Just look at toyota and honda, they’ve been at it for so many years! Even if suggest that their quality is SUPERB, it’s going to take WAY more than 4 years to change the minds of those who think of chrysler as being nothing but garbage!

CanadaCraig – I believe most people on this site or too short sighted to realize what would actually happen to the economy if Chrysler and GM actually failed. They also do not look at it in this light. What would they prefer to have happen if it was happening to the company they work for.
Myself, I personally hope that Chrysler can raise their quality up to the match the current standard. I hope the Chrysler/Fiat merger works. As for Fiat’s quality. Yes I am well aware of the tradition Fix it again Tony. But Fiat has not been around in North America since 1984. That is 25 years ago. So I will reserve judgment on whether they can build a quality car or not until a couple of years after they arrive in North America again.

Another thing. Chrysler has never been, and will never be a respected car company. While GM has the potential to improve their own quality like Ford has, Chrysler needs someone to do it for them. I don’t even consider them a car company anymore. Just a branch that has been passed around and abandoned here and there by other major companies.

It is interesting that so many people can not believe Chrysler would try become a quality leader. And many say that it absolutely can not be done in two years. IMO it will be very hard to do but not impossible. The reason why I say this is due to the fact that I know the difference between quality and perceived quality. What most of you are talking about the reputation for quality. And yes, it took Toyota many many years to build up such a reputation, as it will for Chrysler as well. But that does not mean that the vehicles they build for 2012 could not be quality leaders.

Deep down I am a diehard MOPAR fan, but even I have my doubts about Chrysler improving quality by 2012. There won’t be much left of Chrysler left after 2012 if they don’t get their act together. The RAM truck was a good start. But one vehicle improvement per yr won’t do it.

I have to say 2 years to reach such a goal is unlikely, aiming for that I spot think is a good thing. I happy to hear that they will be aiming so high hopefully with such an aggressive plan in to year they will be up near the best.
improving quality get exponentially harder, so improving to in the high reliability bracket would be feasible if they are dedicated but to be #1 nearly impossible. i feel if they are serious about this they land in the top few.

NRG – You are correct the Ram is an excellent start for improved quality. Then again just interior wise, I believe they have also vastly improved the interiors of the Patriot, Compass and Caliber. Diamler did not do any favors to Chrysler when it allowed them to put out cars with lego style interiors, but things have already started improving.

Contrary to most comments, I am glad that Chrysler is setting such high standards. It means that Chrysler will have a better chance of staying in business and more jobs for Americans and Canadians which will help our economies recover. You people are mixing up quality and reliability. Quality has to to with which materials are used in the car and that has to do with comfort, rattles, and comfort. Reliability has to do with how long the car will last and not break down or be in the shop every month. I’m sure the article means reliability as well as quality.
Good luck Chrysler, and I mean that.
