Chrysler has informed its employees through an internal email that the company will be shutting down worldwide for two weeks this summer. The shutdown, which will begin on July 7th and run through July 21st, is intended to “boost productivity and efficiency.”
The internal email was obtained by the Associated Press and was confirmed by Chrysler spokeswoman Mary Beth Heilprin.
The email told Chrysler employees — including those on salary — that they must take a mandatory two-week vacation during the shutdown. Summer shutdowns for automakers aren’t usual, but they typically don’t include salaried positions.
However, Heilprin says some employees will be asked to work through the shutdown on special projects.

It only takes such a large operation two weeks to cut and run? Wow, that’s efficiency!

if part of the restructuring plan means close it down and save money to prepare for new ideas..makes sense to me. you guys act like you dont know what ‘restructuring’ means.
chrysler is in the pits and info is scarce. another interesting turn of events.

By forcing everyone to take the same two weeks off it’s definitely going to improve efficiency. Instead of having people take time off when ever they want, forcing others to pick up the slack, or leaving others with nothing to do while they wait for those to get back. Makes total sense to me.
The factory has alway’s closed for two weeks, but the salaried positions could choose too work or not. This way the entire work force is in unison.

yeah I don’t get why they are making a big deal about this. Chrysler has been doing this every year, same time in the beginning of summer for years now. lol I know when the Chrysler plants are shut down because that’s when we go up to my friend’s cabin off a lake in Northern Michigan and have a hell of a time tubing, water-skiing, and boating.

So if 3rd grade dropouts only drive domestics what do backwoods home-schooled idiots like you drive?

They may as well start by halting operations where they will build the upcoming SRT8 Nitro because that thing will be DOA.

Trailer Parkians from all over line up to see her whenever HeeHaw is’nt on just for a lube and service.

purdue- They say all workers on salary in this article, with the exception of a few to work on “projects”.
The only difference with this and other shut downs are past ones didn’t sound as major, although I maybe mistaken, and their claiming it’s for “restructuring”.

I think people have a false sense of an average ‘German’ worker. The stereotype is that they work crazy hours, super-efficient … they’re a lot more laid back than what Americans think. I mean, it’s not uncommon for people there to take 2 hour breaks in the middle of the day to have lunch with family. When’s the last time anyone outside of Europe did that? They take their time but when they’re at work, they work. And their vacation time? How about well over a month every year.
As for Chrysler having a 2-week stoppage worldwide, it might not be a bad idea. Everyone relax, time to reassess where they are. It’s all about morale building. Some people might not fathom such an idea, but I think for all the bad news that’s been going on, perhaps the workforce can just worry about spending time with family/friends and not their job for a little bit. And who would complain having 2 weeks off in the summer?
PS Why do you think Germans don’t have coffee holders in their cars? They sit down and drink coffee / beverages where they buy it … they don’t “live” in their cars like Americans. They probably want to ‘look’ at their car while at the rest stop …

Not a bad idea, saves $ I guess if everyone is off and the whole plant is shut down. I guess everyone can plan and prepare.

A response to purdue’s comment way up top. I am with you. Most of the people here know a lot about cars, but when it comes to issues such business practice, bankruptcy law and global warming, etc., most have no clue, or they think they have a clue by googling or listen to some political propaganda. At least there is an entertainment value in laughing some of the “comments.”

Understood. Having myself worked on both sides of the industry, in a UAW factory as well as for a car dealer, I feel that I have the experience to at least speak with some confidence in things. Plus, 80+% of my family (uncles, cousins, dad, brothers, brother in laws, sister in laws) worked or still work (if not retired or dead) in the UAW. One of my family had the most seniority in one manufacturer for overall employees (60 years of service/employment), and one of my roommates was flown up by Iaccoca (while CEO) to speak with him and offer him a job.
