Chrysler will produce its one-millionth Pentastar V6 today, according to The Detroit News, marking a major milestone for the Auburn Hills-based automaker.

Chrysler's one-millionth Pentastar V6 is far more than just a production milestone, though, as it represents the company's return from the brink. The entire Pentastar project (then known as Phoenix) was reportedly canceled at one time during 2008, and Chrysler barely survived its bankruptcy the very next year.

But the 3.6L Pentastar V6 survived it all and is now powering Chrysler's revival. The V6 can be found under the hood of 13 Chrysler models, including the company's award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee and 31mpg Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300 twins.

Adding a feather to Chrysler's cap, the Pentastar V6 has also been named one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for the last two years running.

Chrysler is expected to expand the availability of its Pentastar V6 in the coming years, with the Ram pickup the next likely recipient.
