Chrysler ’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant was originally earmarked to be shuttered after the company’s bankruptcy filing, but the Michigan factory was later purchased back by the new Chrysler with the plans to continue use through 2012. Now, Chrysler has announced good news for the plant’s 1,200 workers yet again – the plant will remain open indefinitely.

The Sterling Heights plant had been under the control of Chrysler ’s bankruptcy entity – Old Carco LLC – but a bankruptcy court approved Chrysler’s re-purchase of the Michigan factory from Old Carco LLC for $20 million – temporarily saving the factory’s 1,200 jobs.

Although Chrysler’s original plan was only to continue use of the plant through 2012, today the automaker announced that it will not only keep the plant open, but that it will add an additional shift and 900 jobs in early 2011 – bringing total employment to 2,100 workers.

The plant will continue producing the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger , as well as a sedan that Chrysler has not yet confirmed.
