Chrysler to sell Dodge-badged Chery A1 in Mexico “very soon”

12/18/2007, 4:15 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Chrysler will reportedly begin selling a Dodge-badged Chery A1 in Mexico “very soon.” The A1 will be built at Chery’s Wuhu plant and exported to Mexico. The A1 is expected to cross the boarder into the United States sometime in 2009, as long as the sub-compact can pass U.S. safety and emissions regulations.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the A1 sells for around $7,100 in China, but will have to come with more features and safety equipment to succeed in the United States, likely bumping the price to about $10,000. The least expensive car currently sold in the U.S. is the Chevrolet Aveo5, which starts at $10,560 and includes side-impact airbags as standard equipment. The Aveo5 is built by GM Daewoo in South Korea.

The Chery A1 is a similar-shape five-door hatchback. The Dodge version of the A1 is expected to be the first Chinese car sold in the U.S.

Plenty of cash strapped college kids and cheap immigrants in US will surely ensure the future of this vehicle. Daihatsu and Toyota has $9K cars as well. If they bring them to US probably with added safety equipments I’m sure they’ll be a better alternative than the Chery. Well take it from me who has test driven the Chery QQ on the freeway. That was one of the scariest experience on the road.

I don’t understand why anybody would buy a new Chery in the U.S. versus buying a $10k used car that may have some miles on it, but is 100 times better in safety, substance, and probably reliability too. Other than pure stupidity. And there are plenty of stupid people out there. I guess it’ll be another form of natural selection. Stupid people will buy Cherys, get killed in them, and that’s the end of them, and the human species evolves smarter.

People shouldn’t be afraid of used cars. They should be afraid of cheap new cars!

Another thread of ignorants who fail to realize that this vehicle will have to pass the same tests as every other vehicle sold in the US. It might not be 4 stars all around, or an IIHS top pick for safety, but it will be REQUIRED to pass government safety regulations. Get a clue you “enthusiasts”…

http://www.safercar.gov/

“All vehicles sold in the United States must comply with Federal motor vehicle safety standards ( CFR Title 49: Chapter V, Part 571). These standards cover a broad range of safety concerns, from windshield wipers and brakes to crashworthiness and fuel integrity. To rate compliance with these standards, NHTSA conducts a 30 mph frontal impact rating and a 33.5 mph side impact rating.”

Random Jerk, this is because it’s much easier for these people to just read the headlines than it is for them to read the entire story. They’re more lazy than ignorant, although ignorant nonetheless.

Why will people buy this car over a used one? The warranty you idiot, that only took a few extra seconds of thought now didn’t it? Chrysler is smart for doing this, you can’t build a cheap k-car in the States like you used to.

If they can sell this thing at $10-grand with air conditioning, a radio, and a decent warranty this thing will sell like crazy.

The phrase “Made in China” is quickly coming to mean “buyer beware” in this country. A few more high profile foul ups by the boys and girls across the pacific and you very well may see many of these cars…piled up unsold in the dealer’s lot.

I love how supposed “enthusiasts” like to throw out references that have absolutely no bearing on the discussion at hand. Would you like to back up your Yugo comparison with something more than the fact they were cheap. Yes we know they were cheap but there were so many different reasons why the Yugo failed. It was the 80’s, they were produced from a Communist-bloc nation, they had zero market presence, a poor distribution network, and nary a warranty with it. Go around your house and see how many things you own were made in china, just look at the computer you posted that comment on, have any idea where the majority of the components that comprise it are made? You failed to counter a single point I made as to why they will sell well here.

07/09, 9:41 AM

Well, depending on the components, many of them are made in Malaysia, the Philippines, the US, European nations, Singapore, and Israel. China has some limited semiconductor work, but mainly their still only involved in final assembly (like putting a macbook together).

Chery did something to piss off Malcolm Bricklin and make him give up on Chery/Visionary Vehicles. Chrysler may end up just as pissed off by the same thing down the road and this new Chrysler/Chery contract may end up to be meaningless. Bricklin probably saw how a Chery crashes at 5 mph, & that could have been when he knew he had to drop China.

I won’t buy a Chinese car in China due to its safety standard alone and also the fit and finish, but knowing the US does have stricter regulations, I am going to give Chery and Chrysler the benefit of the doubt. It is not easy to compete with Kia and Hyundai nowadays, and the rebadged Aveo by Daewoo. The car will fold quickly if it is a POS.

I am not convinced that the car will sell and will be success. There were plethora of inexpensive cars on sale in US and they are gone. The smallish list include: FIAT, Alfa Romeo. Lancia (all were independent companies not owned by FIAT when they were on sale here), Peugeot/Citroen (each had its own dealer franchise albeit Peugeot owned Citroen for a while), Renault, Morris, Austin, Rover, Simca and lastly Yugo.
All of them failed because they could not withstand the rigor of driving long distances. I don’t know if this specimen will manage where other failed, Chrysler will be slapping its badge on it, but Renault Fuego sold here with Chrysler badge was far from successful.

Ok, trashing talking is certainly fun, but have ANY of you test driven a U.S. or at least Mexican bound A1 yet? I am pretty sure the answer to that question is no. Car manufactured for other markets are equipped differently due to different safety standard. This car still has to comply with the U.S. safety standard, which is pretty strict.

Whatever video out there is crap as far as I care. The car that makes it here may be much improved than the one used in the video. Fender folded up like an umbrella? Isn’t that what CRUMPLE ZONES are designed to do so YOU don’t take the impact? Geez people. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. But it is irresponsible to foreclose on the possibility of a good and inexpensive Chinese made car this early on. Ok the possibility is slim, but can we at least give it the benefit of the doubt until one hits a U.S. street?

I just really feel that our market is over saturated. Some might say that having so many choices is good, but I don’t necessarily think so. One draw back for instance is people going out and financing a brand new China mobile, accent, yaris, aveo, rio, suzuki, scion, rather than buying a decent used car. This causes over saturation of used cars on lots, making it so you’ll recieve O dollars for your trade in. So good luck figuring out what to do with your old car, hopefully you have something people really want. Also, what’s the resale value of the pieces, you can buy a 07 aveo with 10k for probably 6 thousand. I’d venture to say the original owner gets shafted pretty good. I have no problem with small cars, but I’d like to see them actually be built well, maybe maintain their value a bit. ( take the Fit for instance ) These little pieces of junk are just a nuisance.

If Chrysler LLC wants to import these little buggers into the U.S. to have something to offer in the subcompact segment, fine (I guess). However, I wish they wouldn’t label them as Dodge products. I think this product will severely dilute the brand image of the Dodge division. I would rather see this product offered as part of a Chery distribution deal within Dodge showrooms, instead of the product actually being badged as a Dodge.
