Chrysler’s Chinese partnership with Chery approval tomorrow?

07/03/2007, 9:36 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Chinese officials are expected to approve a relationship between Chrysler and Chinese automaker Chery today and an agreement between the two automakers from opposite sides of the globe is expected tomorrow.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Chrysler intends to sell the Chinese-made automobiles in North America and other countries. According to them, a December report by Chrysler stated that Chery’s cars, would be sold under the Dodge nameplate, although whether DaimlerChrysler’s pending sale of its U.S. arm to Cerberus Capital Management will affect any of these decisions is unclear. Previously, it had been reported that the Dodge Hornet would be among the Chinese-made Chryslers.

Chrysler’s CEO, Tom LaSorda, is expected to be on hand for tomorrow’s agreement-signing in Beijing.

I saw a crash test report on Chery and their cars suffered a great deal of damage. People instead would have been dead. Is this what we can expect from Dodge? Why does Chrysler even bother to make such a deal if they are up for sale? In any case, Chrysler and Chery make rubbish cars.

I agree Sunshine. All chinese automakers are having problems adhearing to strict safty standards of Europe and the US. Its going to be at least 5 years before they have it all worked out and even then I would be weary of buying one of these cars. Why is Chrysler wasting time on this deal? A little savings on manufacturing isnt going to make up for all the time and money spent bringing this company up to par with the rest of the world.

Here is some great LLN video of a Chineses auto folding up like a tin can: http://www.leftlanenews.com/chinese-sedan-flunks-german-crash-test-with-video.html
No thanks, I’ll pay anything extra not to drive a car like that. My life is worth more than a couple grand saved on a small car.

And with all the other reports about crappy, dangerous products coming from China in the last few months (food, poison toothpaste, poison pet food, dangerous baby toys, recalled tires, not to mention the tin can “Brilliance” car), Chrysler best stay far, far away from China’s production plants.

bahhahaaa!!!!!! global_lightning you rock!

You know, I’m not a huge fan of American cars of late, but surely they’re better than what we’re likely to see coming out of China in the next few years! That tin can video is priceless, and all those mysteriously dangerous products have me on edge!

You guys are clueless. Before any car is sold in the US it has to pass NHTSA requirements – crash tests, proper lights, emissions etc.

The “Brilliance” car folded up like a wet cardboard box because it was engineered (poorly) to be sold in a country without the strong government safety regulations present in most of the rest of the world. It’s not a junk simply because it was assembled by Chinese workers. If Chrysler builds a car in China for the US domestic market you can be certain it will be engineered with that in mind. Not just safety, but larger seats, bigger cup holders, and on and on…

There is plenty of high quality, high desirability products made in China – take a quick look around your own house. Chances are good that most of the components in the computer you’re using right now were made in China. If China can produce products as sophisticated as a computer why couldn’t they assemble cars for Chrysler? The Chinese workers are just as capable of building world class cars as the German, Japanese, or American workers – all it takes is a well engineered product

Don’t underestimate the Chinese. Didn’t you learn with the Japanese and Koreans?

‘Don’t underestimate the Chinese. Didn’t you learn with the Japanese and Koreans?’

Erm, no. The typical American’s attention span is just long enough to watch a 30 second commercial, let alone relate things that have happened over decades.

This should be reason enough to never buy a Chinese car: http://www.leftlanenews.com/chinese-sedan-flunks-german-crash-test-with-video.html

I’ll stick with my Volvo.

some one will die in tht tin can, they have a long way to go in terms of safety and for it to be actually be sold in the US.

^^^^OK apparetly you retards cannot read english. WHat Random Jerk said is exactly correct. Cars cannot be sold here without the obligitory NHSTA crash testing. Any car built to be sold here will be made so we can fit our fat asses in it, put our big gulp in it and run it into a wall/pedestrian/semi at 50mph while blabbling on the cell phone. It’s all in the engineering, not the manufacturing. A spot weld is a spot weld weather it’s done here or in China.

To reiterate, THEY HAVE TO CRASH TEST CARS TO BE SOLD IN THE U.S. BEFORE THE PUBLIC BUYS THEM.

All right, so the Chrysler admits it doesn’t have cars that will sell. So what to do? Design something that people want? Make an engine that doesn’t burn a lot of gas? No, that’s too hard.

It’s much easier to sell Chinese crap to Americans. So what if the US car industry shrinks even more?

People, you’re being raped by your “managers”. How about you rape them too?

I’m from Europe, we still have a good auto industry here. Yours doesn’t look too good right now. Buy American.. but if it stinks, at least buy a VolksWagen Diesel, not the Chinese turds on wheels with a Chrysler label.

The Chinese have remarkably little experience in designing safe cars. That showed a few articles back with a Chinese developed car crumpling like wet cardboard. But I think, given the plans (which is what they want so they can copy the tech), The Chinese can build anything as good as most. Also China does not want to make crap especially when people will pay more for a car that they honestly believe will not let them down.. especially when it truly counts.

But that said, I’m will to pass judgment until I see it. So WOW me…

At any rate, I’m still waiting for my Challenger R/T. NOT the SRT-8. I want to make my OWN upgrades.

Those Chinese turds are going to lead the industry in 10 years, just like the Koreans are poised to do now.

10 years ago Hyundai quietly built small half-decent econoboxes. Now they’ve got the balls to put out a commercial where they pit the Santa Fe against the LAnd Rover LR3, and rightly so. SOon the Brilliance will be jockeying the Camry for top boremobile in the American wasteland. Good times ahead!

RandomJerk, agreed. People would actually have to stop and read what you said for them to have any chance of comprehending it. But they don’t because if they stop and read your post they’ll likely either forget what they wanted to say or find that what they wanted to say is irrelevant. Frankly if this is done right, Chrysler will have a half-decent car that would under-cut even the likes of Kia. People who shop in the $8K segment don’t really care where the car is made.
