PW,

Yes I do. There were lots of cars Chrysler could have rolled out by now here are some of my favorites

CHRYSLER
The 300 Concept (1991) (What CHRYSLER Could have been)
The Citadel (1999) (Much better than a minivan)
The ESX3 (2000) http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/motorsports/1268751.html
The CHRONOS (1998) (Its the 5.0L V10, the profile and the tail. That grill needed toning down)
The ME 412 (2004) (Also what CHRYSLER could have been)

DODGE
The CHARGER CONCEPT (1999) #1 with a bullet! (What the Charger should have been)
The COPPERHEAD (1998) (Viper's stillborn baby brother)
The MaxxCab (2000) (A truck I would buy)
The Razor (2002) (Swing and a miss. It was an easy homerun.)
The Slingshot (2004) (Strike two. C'mon! it was over the plate!)
The Hornet (2006) (Ball one! Still might happen)
THE AVENGER STORMTROOPER!!!!! (2008) (Someone there is trying to kill the company by not building this car!)
The EV (2009) (Should have built the ESX3 so this would be easy to build and sell now)

JEEP
The Jeepster (1998) (The sports Car/Dune Buggy for the Jeep Fan!)
The Gladiator (2005) (Another truck I would buy and proceed to cross the desert Southwest in)
The Rescue (2004) (This and NOT the Commander! Man, this thing is so awesome!)
The Hurricane (2006) (Who doesn't want to have a ride like the Master Chief?)

*These are the one's I care about and could have turned Chrysler around. Of course the Labor issues and and general business inefficiencies still need addressing but these would have been a major help.

Something happened over at CHRYSLER and someone needs to get to the bottom of it so that company can get fixed and stay fixed.

God i hate toyota so much... I mean i'm all for innovation, but its getting out of had with these ridiculous speed transmissions that every other company now feels like they must keep up with. I swear in 2 years we will have 41 speed automatics.

sprockkets - Just the Neon? The FWD cars before the LX platform (Intrepid & 300M) along with the previous gen Sebring had very decent interiors. I've test driving the LX as a 300C and Magnum and I've also driven the new Sebring. They sacrificed everything to save a few bucks and it shows. I can somewhat understand going cheap if the car is less than $14k but on cars that are in the $22k - $40k range... unacceptable.

For those asking about the dual clutch DSG, remember that Chrysler's problems affected their relationship with Getrag US. As such, they've stopped building the new plant and Getrag US is in Chapter 11. What a shame.

Chrysler's interiors were already cheap. See - NEON.

Everyone hoped for Chrysler to improve with Mercedes giving them a hand. They then let the brand stagnate.

Of course, they suck to begin with. I can tell any Chrysler is approaching by the sound of their transmission alone shifting gears.

Eight speed? Come on, you are better off with a CVT.

And Chrysler's new V6 is probably the same engine that is shared with Hyundai, Mitsubishi and them. They all got together to make a quirky 4 banger.

Chrylser can't be faulted for poor product lineup.

the damn krauts of Daimler has pretty much gutted R&D and cheapened the interiors of all the cars.

However, the cars are still good. My wife's 300c SRT8 has been super reliable and even gets a decent 18MPG!

Chrysler is worth saving. It's just that NO ONE and I mean NO ONE is buying cars right now. You can't blame Chrysler or the Detroit 3.

Blame the goddam crooks on Wall St and the banks for causing this housing and credit mess.

Minor detail: Lexus has its 8 cog autobox hooked to a quite powerful V8 and place it into luxury sedan in 70K category. Why I am mentioning this? Because in large expensive sedan few extra hundred pounds don't matter and owner usually can afford gas at any cost. I see those transmissions more of a bragging rights: there is no breakthrough in engineering, but they are heavy and perhaps with less cogs you can get same mileage or better, since tranny is lighter. Chrysler is talking about developing extremely complex mechanics for a fairly inexpensive car. Does this make sense during bailout "or I have to close doors" hearing?

Johnnycanuck,

I wholly agree with that. Though, for readers, my previous comment was about the last and very clear time CHRYSLER laid a golden egg and just chucked it.

As I recall, Chrysler had one of the best Four cylinder engines going out of the 1980's into the early 1990's. I first saw it in the Dodge Spirit and it was the single best reason to buy the car. NA that Four, developed by Lamborghini when CHRYSLER owned them, made 224hp and returned close to 30mpg. Not bad for the time.

The only comparable engine was the OLDSMOBILE Quad4, though not as powerful it was a bit more fuel efficient and was known the withstand insane amounts of boost. It was the fastest four cylinder in the world at over 224mph. In a FIERO, this engine would kill a C4 CORVETTE. This engine was retired because "Americans don't want four cylinder engines never mind that it has the power and performance to make any car better". Heck it was more powerful than the V8 in the C4 until 1988 or 1989.

DODGE also managed to shoehorn a 3.0L NA V6 into a DUSTER and made the first real "Muscle Compact" ever. Could you imagine the NEON with the 3.5L V6 in it? That would have been nuts. Not bright for a Compact FWD but nuts. Could have used Prowler drive bit to make a RWD NEON and use the V6 for a new Compact muscle car... I know there have been FR Focus projects that worked really well. Or maybe a RR (Rear mounted Rear drive) NEON with the V6...

CHRYSLER worked well with MITSUBISHI though not very closely, or else the 3000GT/DODGE STEALTH would have grown into a more capable sports car and the ECLIPSE/EAGLE TALON (Which would have likely become the new DODGE Daytona after EAGLE was killed off) might never have lost AWD.

CHRYSLER needs to pull back some and revisit some old and good ideas.

Good for them. It might just be what they needed.

Blakkarr, it's not just the LH, imagine where they'd be if they had kept up their turbo program as well. For some reason that was abandoned before the Daimler Vampire appeared on the scene. I remember driving more than a few of the K based turbo offerings including the Shelby Daytona which was 200+ horse and they were a blast. If I recall correctly there was a ten year gap between the last of those and the SRT-4/PT turbo cars. Even the current Caliber SRT-4 shows they can still do it at least in the engine bay. It's just too bad they have nothing better to put it in than that.

They should never have stopped building the LH cars.

Love them or not, they were exactly what CHRYSLER needed then and now. Easy to build, solid and lightweight without being expensive, it did everything buyers of CAMRYs and ACCORDs wanted but was happily larger and just better to live with. I still find a lot them in Prime shape, even first Gen LH cars, happily going about their daily duties like they came out just last year.

Even if you did not like Cab-forward, They were just better looking than most of the cars out at the time and are comfortingly easy on the eyes now. If you thought they were cheap then keep driving your MERCEDES-BENZ these were not meant for you. If you are just some elitist jerk that can't like anything with and American badge on it, I can't help you without using a large heavy blunt object.

In 1999, DODGE rolled out a LH-based Charger Concept. It was built out of a heavily modified LH car, an Intrepid, with RWD and a 5.7L Hemi V8. The lightweight car would not suffer with V6 power at all and would have been much more distinctive and practical in the long run. This Concept pointed to a new, updated second Generation LH platform and signaled CHRYSLER's forward movement to safe and solid self-sufficiency.

Then MERCEDES-BENZ came along... (The Germans did less damage to Poland)

Then we got the LX. In the SUV age, it was "low hanging fruit"; a big powerful car for those looking of an alternative to SUVs and trucks.

The "LH2" was still the right and best choice. Ignore the griping and complaining about Cab-Forward styling, it works and would continue to work on all levels (I'm sure they were the same people who thought the first FORD Taurus was ugly as sin).

As a Charger it would have looked far better and be better for... (yep) PERFORMANCE. Better slipstream and upgradable aerodynamics, lighter weight, and just looking much better, a LH2 Charger would have ruled in it's sleep. A coupe version would be easy though not a major immediate priority

As a possible 300n, the "LH2" would have spawned a luxury performance Sedan to put the BMW M5 and MERCEDES-BENZ AMG E63 on notice for half the money.

What is more, the LH2 could be FWD capable and so you'd never have to retire venerable names like "LHS" (which really looked like a properly future tense CHRYSLER) and "Intrepid" (Everything a Taurus lover ever wanted and could easily be more).

More gears mean nothing if the cars Just aren't up to capitalize on it. I really do not like these flying bricks, the "LX" and "LY" after having the LH cars. "Last Hope" was really panning out slowly and steadily and by now CHRYSLER would have been safely solid. Work on the core vehicle before going with the goofy gadgets.

Bring back the LH.

I totally agree about the Journey, Andre. They killed off two very attractive automobiles, Magnum and Pacifica and brought out a boring looking box on wheels with an interior made with plastic more fragile than a playskool toy, and hard seats. They could have made improvements to the Magnum and Pacifica, but no they just kill them.
In many cases, that's how Chrysler has always worked. Instead of improving the models, they just kill them and replace with new crap.

Chrysler has pretty much said it is a goner unless some other car company buys them up; Cerberus has no intention of anteing up any of their other assets to save Chrysler as Cerberus do not do those things (they only screw others out of their money). The trip to DC is simply to try to get funds that will be going along with Chrysler's sale. This will lead to a merger and acquisition that will lead the eradication of any redundancy (e.g., as in CEO, etc.) meaning Chrysler is already a gutted pig even in its guise today. Nardelli has become an expert at golden parachutes so you can bet any bailout funds are already being eyed by him (and many others in Cerberus and Chrysler want their take) to further line his coffers. And the $1 pay line will equate to vastly more when said funds are allocated (shrewd move on Nardelli's part to get at those funds). Why should they remotely care as they are going to be gone.

They also need to focus on good build quality and design. Something they currently lack in comparison to Europeans and Asians. GM has the idea with the Pontiac G8, unfortunately it is built in Australia and not here.
Design is also important. Chrysler has some of the blandest designs ever. Some can get away with conservative, classic designs(ex. Jeep Wranglers). But most are hideous.

And can you PLEASE kill off the godda*mn PTcruiser, Caravan/Town&Country, & Avenger!!!

Honestly though, I see no hope for Chrysler. I just don't get who makes the decisions over there. Just when you think things couldn't get any worse, they go and release the Dodge Journey. I mean, just look at it. It's a PERFECT example of why they are failing. Just LOOK at it. WTF Chrysler!!!
