Citroen unveils GT concept

10/02/2008, 5:15 AM

By Drew Johnson

After teasing us earlier this week with some preview photos and videos of its GT concept, the French automaker took the stage this morning at the Paris Motor Show and introduced the concept car in its flesh. A real-life replica of a virtual race car used in the Gran Turismo 5 driving simulation for Playstation 3, the GT concept was created by a Citroen and Polyphony partnership.

A pearlescent shade of white paint coats the entire car, which is unfathomably sleek, long and low to the ground. Highlights include LED headlamps, and a huge wraparound windshield. Obviously just a concept car, the GT showcases a number of unique materials.

Inside, the GT features black leather with highlights of copper and steel. Gullwing-style doors theoretically allow entry, though even the best contortionist will find the GT a bit tricky to enter. The GT has a heads-up display system that uses red LEDs – an upgrade you can expect to see in production Citroens.

I’ve got to disagree. That thing is hideous. If Antoni Gaudí had been asked to design a car, it might have looked something like this, just with a few towers for good measure.

All I have to say is… Woof! Even though some people may not appreciate the body as a whole, everyone has to agree that someone put some effort into this baby. They tried to make a statement by doing something a little off the wall for them and I think it’ll get the looks it was going for.

I liked it better with the red cloth on it.

as a student of car design, this thing gets mad props! The first read is a distinct proportion, low slung, short front overhang and long eccentric rear. The second read is even more distinctive with two intersecting volume elements. the main body is encased within the fenders. This is extremely challenging to model in clay. And finally the third read is in the details, how the citroen logo on the plan view influences stealth fighter elements. the implied rear view mirrors which i assume are really cameras, and how they took the silhoette of a mirrors to give it volume.

That “track” that it’s on looks like something out of a video game. “Now entering Level 52″.

Despite being French, Citroen has very sexy cars. May not be most reliable, but very good looking. Sort of like a mistress.

The next Countach, right here people!

If only they would produce it, of course they never would. Too radical, and doesn’t fit into their brand image. That’s with everything these days with almost no exception.

Holy Schnitzels, Batman!

That is one awesome looking car. So amazingly awesome that I think I want 7 of them, one for each day of the week.

(and then I wake up and realize that they aren’t sold in America… and if they were, I wouldn’t be able to afford them)

:-(

Now THAT is one good looking concept car. I wish that Citroen does put it into production, but they probably won’t, sadly enough. :(
