Concept looks good, but by that time, ford will have already redesigned the mustang. By 2010, the quality of build of the mustang will surpass the standards of chevy’s camaro. Also, the price of the mustang will be much lower so i highly doubt that the camaro will outsell the mustang. Most people that drive V6 mustangs and by 2010, ford will have a 265 horsepower engine. I like the camaro, nice concept, but i think they are going to fail once again. When the camaro/firebird when out of production in 2002, mustangs were selling for much less.

Dude, I’m not sure which Holden you owned but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the new Commodore since that’s only been out for about a month or so. You know, the one that’s based on an entirely new platform that shares about 0 content(save the engine) with the previous generation. And the new platform seems to be light years ahead of the old one in terms of ridgitity, build quality and handling. I’m not expecting BMW-levels of refinement or anything but this new Camaro will certainly be light years ahead of the old IROC-Zs from the 80s and the Z28s from the 90s.

Just because they’re calling it a Camaro ppl get their shirts all twisted up in a knot. Sure alot of folks will surely buy it for the heritage feelgood factor but I couldn’t care less what it’s called – XPYQ for all I care. To me its just a really nice, fast car at a good price.

At least the mullets are better than dreadlock wearing black guys with gold teeth driving jacked up older model sedans. Blacks have some of the worst taste imaginable, Caprices jacked up to look like trucks and 20+ inch wheels.

Haha, it’s true that jokes with truth in them strike a cord. But I seriously doubt any of us here have mullets and where gold chains… Plus, you know what strikes my cord even more? Being put under a stereo type (being put under as many stereo types as I have). I’m American and I’ve met a lot of ppl who like domestic cars… Some were Asian, some were American, some even European. But none of them fit into the mullet/gold chain stereo type. And don’t get me wrong, I know they’re out there somewhere, but they sure as hell aren’t a majority.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the hate towards Toyota and Honda many times in this site. So hating US is not ok but other countries are alright with ya? The things that I can’t stand are US patriots running around bashing other country’s personal preference over sport while they’re clearly the only ones in the world barbaric enough to worship Monday night football then have God bless whoever stands behind them like a Christian channel show. Veda my man, I don’t hate Japs, or even ‘Charlie’ for that matter. Korean cars are fine too. I am a equal opportunity car enthusiast, if you will. What I do have little patience for, are libbie hippies that loath this country. If you want a good idea on my thoughts, take a look at Fatstrat’s comment above. That has been my point all along about many anti GM/domestic brand people. It’s the ones who also couple their commentary with how much they hate Bush. And they fall into a diatribe on how they hate “gas guzzling” Escalades and Hummers. It’s not any one of these arguments. Sure, anyone can be on a kick to pursuade others to drive fuel efficient vehicles and still be a patriot in the biggest sense of the word. But put all of it together, and you have what I call a S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-T. (I have to spell it that way because LLN has apparently banned that word and will not allow posts with it) Because in all honesty, it’s not the gas guzzling that these guys really hate, it’s the status symbol of the vehicle. It’s the blatent display of wealth. Because if they really had it out for gas hogs, then they would also be on a crusade for Excursions and Grand Cherokees, Mustangs, etc…

I prefer certain vehicles. I don’t hate any vehicle or manufacturer. It’s your hatred that gives you away. Tell me, do you ever hear anyone here saying they HATE Toyota. Or HATE Honda? Proclaiming a love for GM is not the same.

I would like to make one more point.
The US only gets a very small percentage of the cars that are built in Europe. What we recieve is really the cream of the crop from there. European manufacturers also make plenty of forgettable cars, GM/Ford/Chrysler do not have the market cornered in this respect.

I would agree with the points that GM could flash the car a bit less, but spend a little quality time thinking about it from a realistic point of view. GM is indeed like multitudes of companies, guided by shareholders. Constantly reminding them that they have an exciting car coming up is not unreasonable. While you are in the mood for deep intellectual exercise, look into the racing heritage the Camero has, and not just at the drag strip. ‘Retro’ is not always a positive thing, but if the Camero has more than just retro in its looks, it will indeed give what some consider ‘refined’ cars a run for their money at the race track.
And as far as the side bar discussion goes, just surf some of the other threads, I would posit that some of you have responded to insults that might not describe you but you felt they were out of line, or less than called for. Indeed, the mullet/gold chain shtick, while maybe not here is often used on this board to insult or stereotype Americans in general. Dont be surprised if you recieve responses in kind.
In other words, ‘bravo Fatstrat’. Fortunatly all europeans are not as shallow as many of those frequenting here.
I should point out that as auto enthusiasts we should be more united than spewing venom though.

Maybe while they’re at it, GM can gie us a glimpse and a hope of what the 2020 Camaro is gonna look like. The concept is a year old, we won’t see the damn thing until 2009 and now the earliest… 2008. COme back in two years and then rave about your glorious muscle car.

BTW, get over yourselves guys. Not everyone is enthralled with a 3 ton ponderous, unrefined tank with a big honkin motor to motivate it. The mullet/hick/redneck/whatever stereotype has haunted the F-body crowd for decades. You make it out to be some made up lie. Some of us just prefer a bit more refined performance. And if you don’t live at the dragstrip, the Camaro is useless to that crowd.

Doesn’t matter, who’s gonna give two ****s about this in two years anyways… The retro fad will be dead and gone by then.

Any car that generates as much talk (both good and bad) as the concept Camaro has got to be well on it’s way to success. I would be far more worried about it’s future if nobody was talking about it.

I agree that it’s time to put it back under wraps for awhile, but rest assured I will still have plenty of enthusiasm left when I see the first production unit gracing the streets!

Usually the only people offended by mullet and gold chain comments are those wearing said mullets and/or gold chains.

The stereotype comes from somewhere.

That said, this is a great looking concept. I hope for GM’s sake the driving dynamics match the looks. If the Solstice is any indication we’re in for a dissapointment.

I have to agree with the point that they are showing this car waaay too much if in fact it will not hit showrooms for 2 years. Endless press releases, photo ops, ring tones for crying out loud. I”m a huge fan of this car and hope they are in fact ahead of schedule. But I think the initial release and perhaps a few follow up releases were sufficient. Put the lid back on this thing til its cooked, and let people build an appetite in the meantime.

Alot of these comments are really amusing. While we’re all generalizing, all you “Camaros-are-for-mullets” haters are all probably a bunch of “ricers” (or wannabe ricers who haven’t driven anything without a Sony Playstation badge on it) who are scared sh*tless of some old middle aged guy showing up next to you at a light in one of these things and sucking all the “racing” decals right off your lowered I/H/E-equipped Civic/RSX/Integra and then whipping you up and down the canyon twisties too (sorry – “touge”).

Anyhooo….

Nevermind the heritage and nostalgia and what not, the fact is that this is bound to be a pretty tight car on its own merit as long as they can keep the quality up. Its being built off the brand new Holden Commodore architecture (which has gotten great reviews by the way) so it will handle very well for its size and the 400hp LS1 V8 is proven and hard to fault.

I really don’t care for fanboy/haterism. A good car is a good car. And a sexy looking, reasonably well built, 400hp RWD coupe with a V8, that also handles is a good car. And for under $30k it’s a damn good car.

Car companies should really just hold off on concepts until 6 months before its release, so the hype builds fast, and they are out the door. Noone saw any camaro mules running around, and i have yet to see any info on a production version beyond this one. Keep the concepts in hiding until your about ready to push out the car, otherwise all the hype will die off, and youll be left with an incentive ridden hunk of metal. Or take a page out of European concepts, and present something SO outrageous, theres little way it could resemble the production model.. but it still hints at some form of unknown future product, allowing the guessing to begin.

I too am younger (23) and am very interested in both this car and the Challenger. The Mustang never got me… I have always love the Camaro’s, the 1969 RS/SS, huger orange or matte black with FAT ass back tires and 4 speed transmission to be specific. If they produce this car and don’t offer Huger orange… I’ll strip one and paint it myself.

And here’s something else I don’t get.. people keep complaining GM doesn’t build what their customers want. Then they come out with this new Camaro and people rave about it only to then be torn down for no good reason. Personally, I’m certain this will be a big hit – I’ve been asking GM to do something like this for the last 3 years or so. First you have Opel coming here as Saturn, then Holden as Pontiac, and then Chevy gets a cool Camaro that’s American thru and thru. All I can say about GM lately is “it’s about time.”

Concerning the Camaro, I’m not worried about the styling being out of date. It’ll be old to us by the time it comes to market, but most buyers are not car enthusiasts, so it’s likely to be a surprise all the same. On the other hand, GM has been whoring the concept out so much it’s been on magazine covers at my local supermarket, then there’s the upcoming and overhyped transformers movie, to say nothing of that awful ringtone idea, and I think I saw one TV the other day, and last night I had this microwave induced nightmare about GM beaming images of the concept directly into my brain…

um.. yea.

I don’t have a mullet, I have all of my teeth, I don’t live in a trailer home/park, I’m only 22, I work in the technology field, and I would love to have a new Camaro. It seems that I break all the molds of your typical Camaro owner. That said I hope to get a GTO instead.
