CLS fighter: Is this BMW’s four-door coupe?

06/22/2006, 10:40 AM

By admin

BMW is planning a four-door coupe to compete with the Mercedes CLS-Class, according to the latest issue of Germany’s AutoBild magazine. Unlike the CLS, this car will have suicide doors, according to the report. The car has no B-pillar, and is reminiscent of the 1990s BMW 8-Series. In fact, we suspect the only logical nameplate to use for this project would be 8-Series. We have yet to see the full article, so we’re not sure when the magazine reckons this “sensational” car will be available. However, we do have a cover scan of the latest issue after the jump…

Auto marketing is so funny, I’m tired of hearing about 4 door coupes (I do understand the definition of a coupe is a little vague and may not indicate 2 door only, although that’s what it has traditionally been)…but you know what, if ya got 4 doors, ya got a sedan…I don’t care what the marketing guys say.

A coupe is a 2-door vehicle. So a 4-door coupe sounds a bit oxymoronic.

what ever you want to call it, thats actaully a good looking car. though the headlights should be alittle bigger.

and i guess before they get to say there piece ill do it for them.

BMW just gets it. Cars, motorcycles, design, and sailboats. Did you know BMW designed and built the Oracle boat for the America’s Cup?

As a previously outed BMW fanboy, even I know well enough to reserve my judgement until we see this (prospective) vehicle’s rear.

From the front, the 6 series is just stunning, but it all goes wrong in the Bangeltastic ass end. If this is as hot in the back as it is in the front, I’ll sell a kidney for one. A BMW with suicide doors? ::drool::

BMW has said that all models with an odd number in them (3, 5, etc) will have four doors, and those with an even number (6, z4) will have two. The old 8 series had two doors, so I think it would be illogical to name it that.

I find it interesting that both BMW and Audi see the CLS as such a threat. What Mercedes has done with the CLS, as with the R-class, is basically invented a new segment. I still don’t like how they’re completely flooding the market with models though.

Perhaps this will be the new model that BMW introduces at the British auto show, but I doubt it.

Look almost exactly like the 6 series coupe. If the dimensions are the same, then we can expect the back seats to be a joke. I have a 6 series, you can fit adults in the back seats but only for about 30 minutes tops before they want to get out and stretch.

The car needs to be a foot longer to make the back seats useable, and keep the basic form of the 6 series. If they do make the car a foot longer, it’s gonna look unwieldy. The 6 series is already a very big coupe.

Japan, I do not doubt the origin of the word and its literal translation, however it’s adoptation in the automobile industry is synonymous with a 2-door vehicle., and has been generally accepted.
I wonder why you keep using “asswipe dimwits”, can’t you simply make your point and move on.

This thing is going to be worthless pile of **** once you see the latest lineup at your local GM dealer. I’d suggest for your own good that you go down to your nearest GM dealer and buy one of our fantastic offerings.

No, i cant simply make me point and move on. I need to insult everyones ignorance becasue my testicles are really small and i need to make myself feel better. I tired buying a H2 Hummer but it wasnt enough. I tried put 38in tires and a 6in lift on the Hummer, STILL not enough. so i have gotten to the point where the only thing that makes me feel better is to pretend i know everything there is to know about cars and argue with ppl about it over the internet.

A coupé (from the French for cut) or coupe is a car body style with a close-coupled interior offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers up front and for two occasional passengers in the rear). Through the 1950s convertible models were sometimes called convertible coupés, but since the 1960s the term coupé has generally been applied exclusively to fixed-roof models. Coupés generally, but not necessarily, have two doors, although automobile makers have offered four-door coupés and three- and five-door hatchback coupés, as well.

A coupé is distinguished from a sedan primarily by interior volume; SAE standard J1100 defines a coupé as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 ft³ (0.93 m³, 934.6 L) of rear interior volume. A car with a greater interior volume is technically a two-door sedan, not a coupé, even if it has only two doors. Some car manufacturers may nonetheless choose to use the word coupé to describe such a model, e.g., the Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

I want to retract that last comment…i did infact have a date last night and he drove a 1989 S10 Blazer. Let me just say the headroom in the back seat is amazing! i was able to get on all fours with no prob and “Big Jim” as he likes to be called during sex had no problem kneeling behind. Way to go GM!

I think its just become a marketing tool. I will say a 4dr car is a Sedan and a 2dr is a Coupe. I also think a “coupe” sounds sportier. they even call them “4dr coupes” the company knows a coupe traditionaly has 2drs but to make the car unique instead of calling it a “sedan with a coupe like roofline” they say “4dr coupe”. I mean really its a made up segment and you can argue all you want, but its really just a sedan that the marketing ppl are trying to shine up a little bit.

Drop this. It’s not THAT good-looking, even the front, and it says nothihg about the engine… My favourites are the Aston Rapide if it comes out (will eat THIS and the CLS alike) and the Audi 5-class (will eat BMW 6-class); true, no proper competition for CLS by Audi ‘cos the A7 concept is just plain fugly. Porsche should scrap the Panamera or whatever they want to call it – and the Cayenne too. Anything other than a 2-dr coupe by Porsche is just not right. JAPAN: you don’t need to call me an “asswipe dimwit”, i’ll do that for you; Cadillac was a good car like 50 years ago. Since the day they scrapped the 1959 model they just plain suck. True, there is excuse for some later models, e.g. the 1976 Brougham but that’s it. Now it’s just for “asswipe dimwits” like various sizes and shapes of rappers and our beloved George W. “the Ape” Bush

Since we are all making weird names lets just call Lamborghini Murcielago a 5 door hatch back.

Car looks pretty good, like a 6-Series from the front. Wouldn’t this compete with their 3-Series coupe? or is this their next 3-Series coupe?

None the less, looks good.
