DaimlerChrysler is betting on a new fleet of small SUVs as U.S. consumers become more fuel conscious. The company’s Dodge division on Wednesday confirmed the launch of the Dodge Nitro compact sports utility vehicle. The Nitro — a five-passenger SUV — was first introduced as a concept vehicle at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show. The Nitro will be smaller than the Durango, the brand’s only SUV. It is reportedly built on the Jeep Liberty architecture. The Nitro is expected to be built in Toledo, Ohio, and come equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6. It will also be sold in markets outside North America.
