20% huh… So, bascially none of them. 1 out of 5. 1 out of 4 SUV owners take their SUVs off road. So, compared to the norm, Land Rover is less. Not to mention, this is not an impulse “Hey lets go Off Road this thing” It’s a planned, controlled environment. and on top of that, your probably talking mostly about the Discovery or LR3s. We are talking Range Rovers. Oh, and BTW, I live in LA. Almost all Range Rovers have 20″ wheels or larger. I have 4 in my parking lot out side my building that have 22″ and 23″ wheels with low pro tires. They aren’t going off road.

Actually about 20% of land rover owners take their vehicles off road on a regular basis. We do off road events at least twice a year to teach them how to drive off road safely.

So how does someone who can’t even program their cell phone get to pass judgement on a state-of-the-art high-tech vehicle like the Q7? And did these “experts” even take the time to learn how the various features in the Q7 work?
If you just want to change radio stations with MMI, it does not require you to take your eyes off the road any more than a plain old in-dash radio. I would even say it’s easier in an Audi because of the redundant display in the instrument cluster. You want to use navigation? All navigation systems are distracting but again, Audi does it better by supplementing the main map with simple arrows in the driver display in conjunction with voice instructions. You want to use your cell phone? Again it is far less distracting through the integrated MMI phone feature than actually picking up your phone and dialing.
And what’s the complaint about second row space? Did these people even take the time to learn how to slide the second row seats back?
Styling? Well that’s a quite subjective matter. I happen to think the Q7 is very modern looking and I would be hard pressed to find a better looking large SUV. And don’t even mention the ML and the X5. They both look narrow and tall form the back, which is much more like a minivan than the broad shouldered look of the Q7.

Why do you need to go 45 mph in off road height? They only reason to have it up that high is to clear an obstacle and therefore you should be going slow.

As for the visual and audible sensors it is better to keep your eyes on your surroundings then to be looking at stuff in the cabin.

To British_Rover (number30), the Touareg in offroad mode can be driven safely up to speeds of 45mph with 9.6inches of air underneath. And yet it still has the offroad 2 level which gives it 11.8 inches of ground clearance up to speeds of 12mph. The front and rear bumper sensors on the Touareg have audible and visual warnings unlike the RRSS that are only audible. It is also alot nicer to be able to quickly check what is behind you before backing-up with a back-up camera, something the Touareg has but not the Range Rover Sport Supercharged. For a $70,000 base price and such a luxury name like Land Rover I am surprised it is not better equipped than a $57,000 Volkswagen Touareg. I have to agree with Mike(number 23)

Sure, #37, because everyone knows that the 2006 Explorer uses a flathead V8, a four-barrel carburetor, kingpins in the front end, a single mechanical brake on the transmission (which is a three-on-the-tree), and a buggy-spring rear suspension. Also, you have to wait for the tubes to warm up before you can listen to the music on the AM radio.

Go paint your Civic’s interior panels yellow. I hear that adds 25 horsepower.

JD is 100% correct. The Lienert’s are known as domestic basher’s and constantly turn a blind eye to flaws in imports, Asian or European. For the Lienert’s to criticize and Audi is highly unusual and out of character for them, as they are import ass kisser’s ! The rest of JD’s comments are right on too ! Good post JD !!

#22 and #26, you obviously don’t read the Lienerts’ reviews regularly – I can tell you that they’re known for singing the praises of many, if not most import-brand cars, and they’re not afraid to trash domestics (and do so quite often). That cutesy “husband & wife” style puts me off, however.

A few months ago the Detroit Free Press’ Mark Phelan wrote a less-than-glowing review of the Toyota Avalon, and the same kind of ****storm erupted – “How DARE someone write anything negative about a Toyota? Doesn’t he know it’s the only company in the entire world that builds reliable cars with quality interior materials? Figures he’s from Detroit…” Same thing’s going on right now at TTAC, where some people just can’t believe that someone didn’t like the new Camry. Truth is, imports aren’t always as great as many of y’all make them out to be, and domestics are much better than many people think.

Mike considering I sell them I think I should know quite a bit about them.

Lowered position is limited to a maximium of 15 mph if you lock the car in access mode. The vehicle will give you a warning before it starts to raise so that you can slow down if roof clearence is an issue. Normaly access mode is limited to about 10 mph. This is for good reason as in access mode the vehicle is very close to the bump stops and should not be driven very fast. The truck rides like a tank with almost all of the air out of the air springs which you would know if you actually drove a RRS.

The off-road mode is limited to 30 mph which is also a good idea since you shouldn’t drive at high speed with almost 9 inches of air going under the vehicle.

Curb weight (lbs):
Q7: 5467

Range Rover Sport HSE Range Rover Sport Supercharged
5468 lb. (2480 kg) 5670 lb. (2572 kg

Basicly the same as the Q7 and that is with the RRS’s unique double chassis integrated bodyframe design using a unibody and a frame.

A typically equiped sport has a MSRP of $61,050
To equal that with a Q7 you would need to pay $63,770
An X5 would be $61,795
To get a cayenne S set up I think it would be over $70,000 but I got tired of scrolling through all of their option lists.

As to reliablity… I haven’t sold a single RRS that needed to be in the shop more then one time excluding normal maintaince.

Non the less, for $70K it should have everything under the sun. Is it available with a comfort access option? No. It can’t drive in the lifted or lowered postion faster then 25 mph, the materials inside look good now, but you can tell that they will be cheap looking in a year. Their reliability is HORRIBLE, and the thing weights as much as a tank.

To number 25 The Supercharged sport has front and rear Park Distance control standard which is more then most of the competitors in its class. Auto up and down windows are goign to be standard next year. It does not have a backup camera but it is not really large enough to need one.

It is obvious that Mr. and Mrs. Lienert have a hidden agenda and are very biased in their review of the Audi Q7. Motor Trend, Motor Week, Car and Driver and The New York Times all praised the Audi Q7. Detroit is in touble and the Lienerts have resorted to trash talking biased reviews to try and save what used to be Motor City. What a pity. It will do them no good. The Q7 will be a best seller in the USA as in Europe and Detroit will suffer another crushing blow because of their lack of ideas, quality, reliability and poor safety engineering in their autos. Their review will not stop this from happening.

I drove a Land Rover Ranger Rover Sport Supercharged yesterday, Nice looking truck, drives alright, but it was missing so many things that you’ve come to expect in a premium luxury SUV. Simple things like back-up sensors, auto up and down windows. Hell the drivers side window is the only one that goes down with one click. I think the Toureg that my brother just got is a lot nicer, and I would be willing to bet that it is a lot more reliable.

Isn’t it odd that the “Detroit News” bashes the new Audi Q7? Isn’t it odd that even though they did bash it in their article, the public poll on their website asking what readers thought about the Audi Q7 reports that over 50% of people polled thought the Audi Q7 is WORLD CLASS. I think we are not getting the whole story and I think that the opinions of the writers does not reflect what the buying public really thinks.

Good fuel mileage??? It is 14/19 mpg which is really not that impressive for a 5,400 lbs SUV with a fairly good Coeffiecient of drag raiting.

Must be biased because MMI is much more intuitive for beginners than iDrive (which seems to get good once you’ve used it for a while). I think a lot of these GM/Ford people get easily confused in German cars because they’re too logical. I think they like the big-button silly Fisher-Price interiors that often don’t make sense, or have buttons placed illogically.

I have a 2006 Audi A6 4.2 S-line that has the MMI system. Sure it took a few days to get get use to. Its pretty intuitive though. After you get use to MMI (and BMW’s I-drive) you’ll see that its a real innovation. Unfortunately, this article is written by two un-technically savvy old farts. These are the same folks who likely still can not program their VCR and refuse to purchase a TIVO because of how technical they percieve it to be.

The Q7 may not be beautiful but name a SUV that is. This article shows the typical xenophobic Detroit bias. Everyone talks about the Asian invasion of the U.S. auto market but the European makers doubled in marketshare in the U.S. during the 90’s. The real innovation in automobiles is happening with the premium German brands.
