Jaguar has scrapped plans to build its next-generation S-Type sedan from aluminum, according to a story published today by Automotive News. The change of plans was first hinted at by the Financial Times in March, which suggested Jaguar had shelved plans to build cars from a unified aluminum architecture because of financial constraints imposed by Ford . While the XJ and XK models feature aluminum unibodies, the next-generation S-Type sedan will instead be built from steel. Aluminum is used by manufacturers because it offers significant weight savings. However, it seems the performance and handling boost was not enough to justify the added cost to Jaguar executives. (The next S-Type is believed to be inspired by the R-D6 coupe concept, pictured right).
