Earlier rumors had suggested Maserati was shopping Detroit area plants to build the planned Maserati Kubang, with some suggesting the former Dodge Viper plant, but now the true location has been confirmed.
Amidst all of the major news surrounding the introduction of new vehicles and technology at the Detroit auto show, Fiat/ Chrysler/ Maserati CEO Sergio Marchionne also confirmed that the Maserati Kubang SUV will be assembled at the same plant where its platform-mate Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango sister vehicles are assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan, according to the Detroit Free Press.
“We are getting a lot of confidence in the ability of that plant [Jefferson] to make superb products…without having to apologize for the fact that it is Michigan-based,” said Marchionne.
The CEO went on to make the case that this plant could help to dispel myths that Detroit isn’t capable of producing world-class cars. Maserati has set an annual sales target of 20,000 units, with production scheduled to begin in 2013.
Maserati has not yet announced how many new jobs are expected as a result of the SUV. The engine will be sourced from Ferrari’s European operations.
