Beatusmongous, the national deficit is the the biggest thing affecting our economy. Facts don't lie,

No, I'm not a Clinton fan, or a democrat, nor am I republican either. Both those parties are destroying our country equally, and are strippingus of our constitutional rights away from us everyday.

I'm just simply asking questions about 9-11. Last time I checked, the first amendment allows you to ask questions. WTF does 9-11 have to do with landing on the moon Architect? Yes the attacks were real, the question is, was the government involved?

^ Yeah....

I just find it funny how the Fed gave billions to the banks, who will continue to screw the American people, but not the auto industry who employs millions of American workers. It's aslo sad when the Canadian Prime Minister, and Australian Prime Minister pledge money to the U.S automakers before our own government does.

All I have to say is F*CK PRESIDENT BUSH! F*CK CONGRESS! AND F*CK EVERY POLITICIAN OUT THERE!

Sj, bailouts are not okay.

Also, Murderedout, the national deficit is not the only thing that affects our economy. Interest rates, available capital, employment rates, inflation, imports vs. exports, illegal immigration, legal immigration, the stock market, medical costs, insurance costs, housing costs, price of gas, amount of poor, amount of middle class, amount of rich, taxes, even the price of a box of cereal, all affect the economy. Sure some things have gotten worse (deficit and price of gas), but others are much better believe it or not (stock market, inflation, employment rates, exports). There are more people in the wealthier classes and upper middle classes now than there were when Bush started. There are less people in the poor classes than when Bush started. If you consider all things, not just one, and you look carefully, you will see that things are better now than they were eight to ten years ago. And I don't blame Clinton, either. I don't blame the President, no matter who he is, because he really doesn't have the power to make all those things change like that. I blame a whole mess of people, including myself. I shouldn't have bought my home when I did, because it's not worth what I paid, and never really was. Now I'm trying to start up my own business so that I can deal with the problem I created. Once we stop pointing fingers and start working together, we will make things change.

So bailouts are OK when it applies to upper class industries like the financial sector but when it comes to preserving jobs in the midwest republicans say its all about "bad management". What kind of management allowed for the implosion of the financial sector and housing market? Why are those failures excusable? BTW, what the Big 2.5 are really asking for is access to capital, not handouts. They will have to pay the money back but the credit market has damaged their ability to get loans to sustain operations. Republicans dont care about the states affected or the workers affected. Focusing on Wagoner and the UAW leadership is just plain stupid. A lot more than waganer will be out of a job. Also, what about the tens of millions of people who own GM or Ford products? Should they be left without a network for service? How can these politicians not think about all the ramifications?

Murderedout, here's how the three branches of our government work:

Legislative branch (Congress) makes laws. They form bills and pass them in front of the President (Executive branch) who can say "no" to a law. Yeah, he has the power to shoot down stuff, but nothing stops Congress from trying again. The Judicial branch, however, makes judgements with the laws that are already established. The thing that the Judicial branch brings to the table is what is called "interpretation of laws" that are written by Congressed and passed by the President.

Actually, let me rephrase my first sentence. That is how the three branches of our government are SUPPOSED to work. The trouble is, there are things that have changed in recent years. The reason that I say that Congress has more power than the President doesn't actually have anything to do with the actual acts in the government. It has to do with a number of other things. For instance, Harry Reid (a senator from my own state) has been in office since 1987. That's 21 years, much longer than the President's two terms. See, these guys may not get their laws passed with the current President. But all they have to do is wait until another person becomes President to try again.

Also, since there are more than one, they can team up to convince voters to work in their behalf. As Catiadesigner said, politicians tell you what you want to hear, or better yet, they tell you what they think will get them re-elected. Reid, for instance, has been fighting against the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Repository forever. But he never tells the truth when it comes to this issue. If one were to listen to Reid, one would think that the question that is being asked is as follows: In which state should the Federal Government put the nuclear waste?

Some people may even think the question is like this: Should Nevada house the nuclear waste?

If you were any other state, what would be your vote? Because if you say "no", where would it go? It has to go somewhere.

But truth be told, that question has already been decided on. The vote was 49 states for "yes" and one for "no". Majority rules, and we lost.

So now, the real question that is being asked is like this: How much Federal funding should Nevada receive to build the roads for waste transportation and build the site for the nuclear repository?

Well, as long as Reid keeps fighting it, the number will go down and down. Why? Because he doesn't care for the people. He doesn't want to educate people on the benefits of nuclear energy, the safeties that have been put in place, the scientific research benefits that our schools could have, the money that we could receive, and the future of energy. Instead, he wants to get re-elected. So what does he do? He scares the public about the nuclear repository and then tells everyone that he will fight for Nevada so that we don't have this nuclear waste in our back yard. That's what politicians do. They tell you things that will get them re-elected so they can stay in office (or get in office) and try to make new laws.

That's how these guys have more power than the President. He can only do the re-election thing once. These guys can do it over and over until they die. And, since there are more of them, they can spread their political propaganda out much easier and much faster than the one guy who's only real power is the ability to say "no". The thing is, he can't say "no" to the American public.

I picked on Harry Reid because of my personal involvement in the Yucca Mountain project, not because of his party affiliation. I do not like Harry Reid, but I wouldn't like him if he was a Republican, either. I do not like politicians that are willing to throw away their values and to mislead the people in order to line their own pockets. Personally, I'd love to see almost every Senator and Representative be replaced with all new blood. We need people that are willing to hash out what's best for us, not what's best for their re-election.

.

About 9/11, I was part of the news crew on the West Coast when all this bad stuff went down. There were a lot of things that happened that we were instructed not to share with the public for fear that widespread panic may break out. Much more happened than the Twin Towers (and the Pentagon was not the only thing). At least 11 planes were known to have been hijacked. One was heading to Chicago, one to Houston, two to L.A., one to San Francisco, and several to other places. There was another bomb in another government building that was talked about for only a few minutes, and then never mentioned again (for the same reason I stated above).

The attacks were real. Take it from someone who works in the video industry. When you see those two cameras showing different colored explosions, you must realize that each brand of camera has a completely different color sensitivity. One may show orange and yellow much better (Ikegami and Canon) while another will be more sensitive to blue (Sony). One may also be more sensitive to light and the other may bring out the shadows better. Not only that, before a camera is used for a shoot, it must be white balanced so that it picks up the colors in the most correct way possible. If Camera A is white balanced in the shade and Camera B is white balanced in the sun, the colors will look very different from each other.

Also, ground angles and air angles will appear to have different impact locations, which locations can be affected by lens aperture and zoom as well. Lens manipulation is how they make the moon look really gigantic in the movies and in photos, even though it never is that big to our eyes.

The 9/11 incident was not staged or enacted by Bush. The attack on the WTC was intended not only to kill people, but to create fear and distrust, to bring our economy to its knees and to end capitalism. It took years, but it appears that the intended effect is starting to happen...

Why is it that when you ask questions about 9-11, your immedialty attacked and your credibilty is attacked?

Let's examine something, Thomas jefferson(U.S. president) one of his most famous quotes was" dissention is the greatest for of patriotism", that was said by Thomas Jefferson. I find it very disturbing that since 9-11we been following the philospy of Herman Gorring, ( a nazi). Herman gorring made a statement that" it's easy to take a country to war, easy, it doesn't matter if there a democracy, dictatorship, communist, or anything. what you must first do is convince the people there under attack, then you denounce all the pacifists for being unpatriotic, and you also state that they are putting the country in danger, because of the position there taking, empowering the enemy. "

Now isn't that the exact thing we been told since 9-11?

Beatus: there are 600 more people that have more power than Bush does? Oh really? I guess you never heard of the Veto pen have ya? So what your telling us is Bush inherited a surplus from Clinton and now his administration turned that surplus into a 9 trillion dollar deficit, and you so the economy is better now? ROTFL!!!!!!!!!!

Borat if 9-11 was not fake, then why are a great majority of families of the victims, asking for a new investigation? Why was Bin laden never charged for 9-11? Go the the FBI website, hes charged for the USS cole, and the U.S embassy bombing, but oddly enogh, not 9-11, i find that very peculiar. I also find it odd that Bush stonewalled the 9-11 investigation for 2 years. How did three buildings collapse from 2 planes? No building in the history of mankind has fell at the rate of gravity from fire. They blew into powder, the only way that could happen is by demolition. Jet fuel is 4/5s kerosene. It doesnt burn hot. If you turn on your camping stove for 3 hours shouldnt, it melt the grates? it doesn't! So your saying 19 highjackers armed with box cutters, deafeated the U.S. multi-billion dollar air defense system, all while conspiring with a 6 and a half foot beared man, who lives in a cave? If what they said was true? why was noone fired? or demoted in our air defense system? Because if noone is fired, the world moves on as it is. They also said they found pieces of flight 93 wreckage 5 miles away? I could see 500 yards, but not 5 miles. 9-11 just doesn't add up.

The wars in Iraq & Afghanistan divert public money into private hands. Taxpayers funds are used to pay for weapons and now even (very expensive) armies bought / rented from private companies. In most cases the public has borne some of the development costs for the hardware and has borne almost all of the training costs for the armies.

If anything the auto industry should be amongst the direct beneficiaries of the war as vehicle suppliers. If they couldn't put two and two together and envisage rising petrol prices and a subsequent fall in demand for the types of vehicles they were building, surely that's their fault.

Let the big three fall and encourage more enlightened companies to come and manufacture in the USA. Why should the working man care about the nationality of the fat cats on his company's board? It makes no difference whether the guys taking the profits and paying as little tax as possible are American or Korean. All he needs to worry about is somebody sending him a paycheque next month.

Borat Thomas jefferson said, "dissention is the greatest form of patriotism" , next there are many guys in the union with college degrees. Wow, all this talk and nobody mentioned how the war in Iraq and Afghanistan drained our economy, which has now trickled down to drain the auto industry. You guys all share a brain?

I think Winston Churchill stated something of sorts: democracy is a horrible governing system, except there is nothing better. Ergo, we will have democratic-republican swings every 12-16 years and in 10 years with or without bailout current crop of auto manufacturers will be nothing like we see today. That include unions. So, guys who work for unions, take a course in local college and look forward for more productive future.

I don't suppose any of you have noticed, maybe its a product of a flawed two party system, but when ANYTHING goes wrong, one side blames the other.
Some people need to realize that any politician will only tell you what he/she thinks YOU want to hear.
Politics has played a very small role in this situation, greed has played a far bigger one, and no doubt will continue to do so, it seems to be the American way.
I'm not saying greed doesn't exist elsewhere but I have never lived anywhere where it seems to be the all encompassing mantra it is here.

come guys just let GM go, is time for CEO and exce. learn something. Even you give GM the money, they just going to pocket in to their CEO and Exce. and then still going continue ask for more. Bailouts for GM is not going to work out, they just have to find different way to turn the company around. Dem. really didn't do anything good so far for this country since before 9/11, that's why Rep. need to show them some tough love.

Very interesting article at CNN about GM, Bankruptcy, and why it may not be an option.
http://money.cnn.com/2008/11/13/news/companies/gm_bankruptcy/index.htm?postversion=2008111305

I guess the Republicans are gonna show some "Tough Love"
We'll see if they can handle the storm if GM does go under, because the Dems aren't gonna take the blame, and GM may not be around to.

@ beatusmongous, I do not agree with all you've written, but most. Good post.
.
@mayer_ray_nagin, it is more the team that a President assembles than the President who gets things accomplished. Obama seems to want to work with both sides versus just the Democrats; that way both side will get the praise or the blame. These problems are removing targets so changing minds is critical to resolving the real issues. BTW, I don't care for any politician, so there's my bias.

"Seems like the Republicans are all for the end of the American Auto Manufactures. " That's EXACTLY what the Democrats in office want you to think. Not all Republicans blatantly oppose the bail out, but they don't want it to be a "bail out" but a loan with strict regulations instead. They don't want anyone to have a free ride, and they want quite a bit of punishment to the auto industry for their failures. But Democrats in office speak out against Republicans a lot in order to make the public think that the economy is the responsibility of Republicans only. That is simply not true. The economy issues have members of both parties involved. However, the Republicans simply do not feel the need to stand up and voice their opinions like the Democrats do, which is bad for the Republicans. And no, this isn't Bush's fault, either. There are 600 other people that have more power than he does. One man cannot do this all by himself. He had plenty of help (Congress), but he wanted to be nice and not say bad things about those people that voted his way and then stabbed him in the back (both parties did this). But in all honesty, the economy is better off now than it was before Bush started. We just never hear about that, do we? Hmm... I wonder why?...

I don't say the media has a political bias, even though I'm part of it and I see it every day, but I do say one major thing that people just don't realize when they watch the news. News is NOT information. News is entertainment. We do not make news to inform you of what's happening. We make news to keep you watching. The more you watch, the better our numbers are. The better our numbers are, the higher the demand is for advertising air time and the higher our advertising prices are. If you keep watching, we essentially can make more money. We don't care about political bias. We care about viewers and what they want. We won't tell you that the market is really great, because you'll watch the station that tells you how bad things are. You want to be "informed", but if we entertain you properly, you'll stay tuned.

But here are two options of what I predict may happen:

If GM does in fact go completely under and close their doors, then there will be many people out of work for some time. However, the three million people that will lose their jobs make up only 2% of the entire workforce. As bad as that is, it's not going to make the country completely blow up and die. There are still many investors out there, and a startup company that may be interested in buying some of the old GM manufacturing equipment will show up and buy a plant or two. Then, someone will start making cars again, and a new auto manufacturer will be born. Maybe a couple of new ones will be created. Who knows? But I certainly don't expect three million people to just sit on their @$$es and complain about losing their jobs until the end of the world. Instead, some will get together and make things happen. We may end up seeing the best cars the world has ever known coming out of this.

If GM goes bankrupt and doesn't go out of business, they will make quite a few changes in their structure. You may see a lot of changes throughout many industries as a result. Salary caps will start, along with some new innovation in cars. The unions may be restructured as well. The people at the top need to realize they are sucking the life out of some companies, and shareholders are important but customers are even more important. I guarantee if GM chooses this option, they will become a leaner, greener, more efficient machine, and great products will be produced in the end.

Please, no one say things like "GM making good products? LMAO!", because that is the immature way of looking at things. The only way they can be strong is if they make a good product, and they will if they want to survive. I honestly see things happening this way, and if they do, they will have my backing.

400horsesSS,
Dems started one war. In 1993 when World Trade Center was attacked for the first time (February 26th) and 6 American lives were lost, the sitting president was busy playing with his cigar instead of finishing Al Qaeda. That led to 9/11 and Afghanistan war, which is not fake. We can argue validity or necessity of Iraq war in 2008, but in 2002-2003 chief of CIA from Clinton administration stated to congress that war was a must to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction. Those weapons were presumably stockpiled and ready for use by terrorist against US and its interests. So much of history as I recall it.

As far as GM, Ford and Cerberus mishandling of their own private business - since they have not shared their profits with the rest of the country when they were profitable, there is no reason for the country to aid them when profits are gone. I have more sympathy for a guy who sells pizza and can't make a living then for Red Ink Rick and Ford Family Trust. As far as workers - if they have desire and talent they will find work. 50% of cars produced in US are made by Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai. Latest factory GM opened in Russia, not Detroit.

Lastly to address Dems Vs. GOP debacle. We need both parties. When Dems were in complete power (1992), they screwed the country to a point that it created Republican Revolution in 1994. Like any revolutionaries, Republicans got completely drunk on power and become as corrupt as Democrats once were. Furthermore, they completely forgot Republican principals (or rather Libertarian principals) of smaller government and less taxation. Which brought us to election day 2008.

Wait ......... Some of you don't see the big picture....
If "GM" or any of the Big 3 goes B.K. they will still be making cars, it's just that they can lay-off as many workers as they like, close open doors as they like and don't have to pay a dime to many one, contracts with parts manufactures, legal settlements, and they can fall behind retirement benefits, and not pay any local government bills. 80% of the cars they sell in the U.S. can be built south of r north to the borders, the lost is not for "GM" it's for every one els that depends on them, GM will still make and sell cars, the Big wings will still get paid, it's every one esl that will be left out in the cold.....

If GM were to go the Chapter 11 route, it's not like the doors would close and they'd instantly stop making cars. I don't want to see GM (or the other USA auto manuf.) fail, seeing as they're intertwined within so many unseen aspects of our economy. That said, their current plight is not the result of the financial crisis we're knee-deep in. The long and the short of it is that the Detroit 3 have made some unfortunately poor business decisions and the government shouldn't have to throw a bunch of money at GM's problem as a result. I would support the "bailout" of GM and others if there were some conditions to the whole deal. Drastic change in their business model, or at least the current approach for starters.

Ummm, the democrats have done more to kill industry in this country than anyone. Ever hear of OSHA? The UAW? EPA? NHTSA? All created and/or loved by Dems. All a scourge on industry, especially the Big 2.5. The republicans just don't want to spend good money after bad, and they are smart enough to know that C11 THEN help would be the best course of action if any action is to be taken. If the US helps now, with all the UAW & Dealer crap that needs to be shed, it would be good money after bad. GM needs to lawfully shed a LOT of dealers, get UAW concessions, ect, all of which can only be done under C11.

Seems like the Republicans are all for the end of the American Auto Manufactures. This will open the door for Foreign Manufactures to step in or at least have most manufacturing done outside the U.S. The Republicans are showing the public who they really work for.
It sucks for the Big 3 that they've lobbied these guys for so many years to do their bidding in congress but now they need them the most they are turning the knife in their backs.
