In what has to be a frightening bit of déjà vu for Ford, Continental is recalling more than 390,000 tires that were fitted as original equipment on Ford F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks. Ford was caught up in a defect tire debacle with Firestone in 2000.

Continental is recalling 390,657 Contitrac TR tires produced between May 2007 and September 2008. The tires were fitted as original equipment on 2008 and 2009 model year Ford F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks. The tires were also sold as aftermarket products.

According to the South Carolina-based tire maker, the Contitrac tires could experience tread belt separation under some condition, increasing the likelihood of a crash. Continental will replace the affected tires free of charge. The recall is slated to begin this month.

Continental says it has received about 100 property damage claims over the defective tires and five claims of personal injury. Continental and the NHTSA are also investigating a fatal 2009 rollover crash involving a Ford F-250 equipped with the tires in question.
